It is important to tell students that gonna is not used in writing; it is the way going to is pronounced. It is also important to stress that gonna is substituted for going to in future-tense sentences only;
I'm gonna move to America. (=I am going to move to America which is planned)
You're gonna tell the truth . (=it is planned that you are going to tell the truth)
We’re gonna learn English (=it is planned that we learn English)
In very informal language, gonna is sometimes written and spoken without going to as in these examples, which have the same meaning as the sentences above:
I'm gonna move to America
You're gonna tell the truth
We're gonna learn English
With or without to be going to, gonna is very casual, and should only be used in informal conversation or when writing a representation of informal conversation.
