2.8.c Map Layout Exercise
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS) for Environmental Protection Week 2: GIS & Geovisualization Exercise 2.8.3. Creation of a map layout Introduction. This exercise will focus on creating a map layout for the choropleth map for population density in Uzbekistan regions designed in the previous exercise. The map layout will include fundamental elements of maps: title, scale, and legend. In order to give map readers a better sense of the overall mapped region, neighbouring countries will also be included. To do so, download administrative areas for Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan from http://www.diva-gis.org/gdata . This spatial datasets contain the outlines of the countries and administrative subdivisions. Extract the zip files in a specific folder. In order to add the outlines of the neighboring countries, select from the Layer menu, Add Layer and then Add Vector Layer. For each neighboring country select the adm0 shapefile and click OK. After adding the vector layers of all neighboring countries the result will be like that: For each layer, right-click and select Properties. Select color and set the R, G, and B parameters to 255 to select a white color. Click Apply and OK. Repeat this for all neighboring countries. Then click on Labels. Select “Show labels for this layer” and Label with: NAME_ISO. Click Apply and OK. Repeat this for all neighboring countries. In order to create a map layout for the choropleth map select Project from the top menu and then “New Print Composer”. If desired create a unique print composer title, otherwise leave empty. Click OK. A new composer window appears. To add the population density map, click Layout, Add Map, and then draw a box inside the perimeter of the page. Select the tab “Item properties” at the right. Go to Extents and click the “Set to map canvas extent” button to place the map at the center. The appropriate map scale may also be defined. Go to Scale and type the denominator of the ration scale. For example, for a scale 1:5500000, type 5500000. To also add a scale bar, select from the top menu Layout, Add Scalebar. And place the cursor at the at the position of the scalebar on the map. The size and position of the scale bar may be adjusted by clicking at the edges of the rectangle and dragging it to a new position. Select the Item properties tab on the right. Open the drop-down Style menu and select a style for the scale bar. The units of the scale bar may also be adjusted in the Units submenu. To add a title to the map, select from the top menu Layout, Add Label. and draw a rectangle to define the position of the title. In the Main properties submenu on the right type the title of the map: “Uzbekistan Population Density, 2015”. In the Appearance submenu, select the font and font size for the title and align it to the center and the middle. By dragging the title, it may be placed at a different position on the map layout. To add a legend for the map, select for the top menu Layout, Add Legend. And place the cursor at the appropriate position of the legend on the layout. The default option for the legend is to include all layers. To change that, uncheck the “Auto update” checkbox in the Legend items submenu. Then select and manually remove the layers that will not appear in the legend by using the minus button. At the end, only the population density values should remain. The Edit button (looks like a pencil) allows to change the title of the legend. Type an informative title for the legend: “People per square kilometer” and click OK. The legend may be moved to an appropriate position by dragging the legend rectangle. Also the “Legend” title may be changed or deleted in the Main properties submenu. To add a north arrow, select from the top menu Layout, Add Image. and draw a rectangle to define the position of the arrow. The Search Directories submenu includes different images that may be added to the map layout. Select a north arrow. When the map layout is complete, it may be exported as a PDF. Select from the top menu Composer, Export as PDF and save the pdf file. Deliverable: the .pdf file of the map layout Download 5.02 Mb. Do'stlaringiz bilan baham: |
