y. 7 ê NOTE. The Catholic Directory, now in its 76th year of publication, was known up to 1912 as the Madras Catholic Directory and Annual General Register. It was then preceded by the Or do redtandi Officii Divini, etc., which is now issued separately.

In offering the C a th o lic D irectory for 1926, the editor thinks he ought to tender a few words o f ap o lo gy to the reader. F u lly aware o f the many short-comings, omissions and oversights which have crept in the present issue, the editor can vouchsafe t o assert that this is a fair attem pt at embo d ying most o f the suggestions and construc tive criticisms which were sent to him in the course of last year. T h e chief improvement o f the present issue consists in this : the book has been divided into three parts : 1. General Inform a tion ; 2. Territorial U n its ; 3. A lp h abetical Lists and References. T h is renders classifi cation o f items more easy and opens the w ay for further improvements which we contem plate in the next issue. T h e Historical Notes of several dioceses have been recast and to make them still more precise and concise the editor ventures to call for the help o f all those who could give any assistance on the subject. The list of Priests is still very faulty. It appeared to the editor like a maze which he tried to unravel. He struck off several names o f priests whom he knew to be dead for several years. O n the other side he added m any names of priests whom he knew personally for the last decade and who had not yet found their w ay into the Directory. Th ese had been mostly w orking in Colleges. Besides he got letters from several priests com plain in g th at their names were om itted in the D i r e c t o r y ; and strange to say in the proofs he got from the Chancelleries these names were not mentioned either. T h e r e fore, if an y omission o f the kind is still to be found, the editor asks that a report be made, not to the editor, but to headquarters, where the mistake m a y be corrected in the proofs for the next issue. W e cannot th an k the Chancellors suffi cien tly for their readiness in p ro vid in g the required information, only K a n d y h avin g failed to forw ard the Gazetteer. T h e list o f our A uxiliaries has been asked. T h is we cannot g ive this year as the number o f all our helpers, brothers, sisters, sanyassis is still to be desired. I f the various Chancelleries g ive us the number o f helpers th ey have, perhaps next year we m ay give an exact list o f Auxiliaries. W e th an k most h eartily the R ev. C. Houpert, S.J.,
