Subject-Verb Agreement in Inverted Sentences
An
inverted sentence
is a sentence in which the subject follows the verb. Some inverted
sentences
begin with there or
here. Look for the subject after the verb, and be sure it
agrees with the verb in number.
Over the mantelpiece
hangs a
portrait of Lucinda.
There
reside two of the kindest persons in the neighborhood.
When an interrogative sentence
contains an auxiliary verb, the auxiliary verb usually
precedes
the subject, and the main verb follows the subject.
