Harry Potter’s first flying 1 lesson
Harry Potter’s parents are dead. They were wizards 2 , so Harry is a wizard, too. Now he is at Hogwarts School where he can learn to do magic 3 and to play Quidditch, a sport on broomsticks 4 in the air. Hogwarts is a school in a castle, and the pupils live in four ‘houses’. Harry and his friends Neville Longbottom and Hermione Granger are in Gryffindor house. They do not like Draco Malfoy, a boy in Slytherin house. Today the two houses have got their first flying lesson together. Harry is excited about this. But Draco says he can already fly and Harry does not want to look silly in front of him. At three-thirty that afternoon, Harry and the other Gryffindors went outside for their first flying lesson. The Slytherins were already there, and there were twenty broomsticks on the ground 5 .
6 Hooch, arrived. “What are you all waiting for?” she barked. “Everyone should stand next to a broomstick.” Harry looked down at his broom. It was old. “Put out your right hand over your broom,” called Madam Hooch, “and say, ‘Up 7
“Up!” everyone shouted. Harry’s broom jumped into his hand, but Neville Longbottom’s didn’t move 8 . Maybe brooms, like horses, knew when you were scared, thought 9 Harry; it was clear that Neville wanted to stay on the ground. Madam Hooch then showed them how to climb on their brooms. “Now, at the sound of my whistle 10 , you
jump up from the ground,” said Madam Hooch. “Go up just a few feet 11 and then come back down. When you hear my whistle – three – two –” But Neville was nervous and jumped before Madam Hooch gave the signal with her whistle. “Come back, boy!” she shouted, but Neville flew up 12 very fast – twelve feet – twenty feet. Harry saw his scared white face, saw him fall from the broom and – WHAM – he was back on the ground. His face was in the grass. Madam Hooch checked how he was. Her face was white, too. “Broken arm 13 ,” she said. “Come on, boy – it’s OK, get up.” Then she looked at the others in the class. “I must take this boy into the school. Don’t go near those brooms or you’ll be out of Hogwarts 14 before you can say ‘Quidditch’.” Neville went away with Madam Hooch, and Malfoy started to laugh. “Did you see his face?” The other Slytherins laughed, too. “Look!” said Malfoy. He ran and took a ball out of the grass. “It’s that silly thing Longbottom’s grandma gave him.” It was Neville’s Remembrall, a magic ball. It told him when he didn’t remember to do things. “Give that here, Malfoy,” said Harry. “I think I should put it where Longbottom can get it – how about – at the top of a tree?” “Give it here !” Harry shouted, but Malfoy was already on his broomstick. So he already knew how to fly. He flew up to the top of a tree and called, “Come and get it, Potter!” Harry took his broom in his hand. “No !” shouted Hermione Granger. 35 40

Check-out “Madam Hooch told us we mustn’t move. We don’t want trouble.” Harry didn’t listen to her. He climbed on his broom and jumped. Up, up he flew – he didn’t need lessons for this – this was easy, this was great. He turned and looked at Malfoy in the air. It was a shock for Malfoy. “Give it here,” Harry called, “or I’ll knock you off that broom! 15 ” “Oh, yes?” said Malfoy, but he looked worried.
Harry knew what to do. His broom shot towards
16 Malfoy. Malfoy only just moved out of the way in time 17 . Harry turned again. “Your friends can’t help you up here, Malfoy,” Harry called. This was clear to Malfoy, too. “Catch it,” he shouted, and he threw 18
ground. Harry saw the ball go up and then start to fall. The next second he was in a fast dive after
19 the ball – the wind whistled 20 in his
ears – he put out his hand – a foot from the ground he caught 21 it, just in time to bring his broom up straight and come down on the grass with the Remembrall safe in his hand. “HARRY POTTER!” His heart sank 22 when he saw Professor McGonagall, the head 23 of Gryffindor house. “Never – in all my time at Hogwarts – Potter, come with me, now.” Harry walked behind Professor McGonagall to the castle. He was out of Hogwarts, he knew it. He wanted to speak, but no sound came out. Professor McGonagall didn’t even look at him. They went into the school, upstairs, and still Professor McGonagall didn’t say a word to him. She opened doors and went down corridors. Finally she stopped outside a classroom. She opened the door and looked into the room.
“Excuse me, Professor Flitwick, can I have Wood for a moment?” Wood was a big fifth-year boy. He came out of Flitwick’s class. “Come with me, you two,” said Professor McGonagall. She took them into an empty classroom, closed the door and looked at the two boys. “Potter, this is Oliver Wood. Wood – this is your Seeker 24 .”
“Are you sure, Professor?” “Yes. The boy is a star! Was that your first time on a broomstick, Potter?” “Yes.” Harry didn’t know what was happening, but maybe he wasn’t out of Hogwarts. “He caught that thing in his hand after a fifty-foot dive,” Professor McGonagall told Wood. Wood now looked excited. “Do you know what Quidditch is, Potter?” he asked. “Wood is captain of the Gryffindor team,” Professor McGonagall explained. “He looks right for a Seeker, too,” said Wood. “Small – fast – we must get him a good broom, Professor.” “We need a strong team this year. In that last game it was much too easy for Slytherin.” Professor McGonagall looked at Harry. “I want to hear that you’re working hard, Potter, or you’re still in trouble.” Then she suddenly smiled. “Your father would be proud 25 ,” she said. “He was very good at Quidditch, too.” adapted from: Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by J.
