HARTPURY FOOTBALL ACADEMY

HARTPURY FOOTBALL ACADEMY

The aim of the Hartpury Football Academy is to attract and develop high

quality football players to study at Hartpury College with a view to producing

players that have the ability to play at professional and semi-professional levels.

The Academy has been in existence since 2002 and has become the

leading education based football academy in the UK.  The Hartpury Football

Academy is split into two sections; Junior and Senior. The Junior section

caters for the Further Education side of the College and includes players

aged 16-19 years. Junior successes include being crowned English Colleges’

FA National Champions in 2008, 2010 and retaining the trophy in 2011. We

have also been English Colleges’ FA Southern Premier League Champions for

the past four years and English Schools’ FA U18 National Champions in 2009

and 2010. The Seniors are made up of Higher Education students on degree

or foundation degree programmes aged 18 years and upwards. Notable

achievements with the Seniors include winning the British Universities National

Championship in both 2007, 2008 and again in 2011 as well as the British

Universities Southern Premier League for the past four years. The Senior team

are the current British Universities National Futsal Trophy Champions.

A number of Academy members have gained international honours

whilst playing for Hartpury. A number of Further Education students have

represented England Colleges’ Under 18s and England Schools’ Under 18s

with the games being showcased live on Sky Sports. We are also honoured to

have had 20 Higher Education students who have represented the England

and Great Britain Universities teams. A number of current and former students

are enjoying promising careers in both the Football League and at non-league

levels. The list of clubs include Cheltenham Town,  Hereford United, BK Hacken

(Sweden), Brisbane Roar (Australia),  Exeter City, Forest Green Rovers, Nea

Salamis Famagusta (Cyprus) and Ostersunds (Sweden).

HARTPURY ACADEMY OF SPORT – THE CONCEPT

The very nature of our further education courses and undergraduate programmes means that we attract talented

athletes who are as committed to their sport as they are to their academic studies. The Hartpury Academy of Sport

concept enables athletes to continue their academic education whilst further developing their abilities and potential to

become elite performers within their chosen sport.

The quality and reputation of the Academy has led to an association with

npower League 2 side, Cheltenham Town, which exposes Hartpury Academy

players to professional football and provides a realistic entry route into the

full-time game. The Academy also has links with clubs at all levels of the non-

league pyramid.

Facilities and Performance Development

The Academy has access to top class facilities in the Sports Academy Centre,

allowing players to perform at the elite level and has cultivated a winning

culture by using a holistic and forward-thinking attitude towards both training

and playing. Video analysis is used on a regular basis along with the latest

conditioning and coaching techniques to create an environment where

individuals can reach their full potential.

Selection

The Junior and Senior sections both contain three teams. To play Junior

football, you need to be registered on an academic programme and be under

19 years of age. To play Senior football, you need to be enrolled on a Higher

Education programme but there is no age restriction.

Trials are held prior to the start of term and at the beginning of the academic

year. Please note that entry onto an academic programme does not

automatically entitle you to a place on the Football Academy.

Scholarships

To support top level players in the Football Academy, Hartpury offers

scholarships. These are given on individual merit and are assessed at the end

of each year.

NICK HANCOCK

Nick joined Hartpury following his release from West Bromwich Albion.

He is currently an important part of the Senior 1st Team whilst studying

for a degree in Sports Business Management.  Nick is currently in his

fourth year at Hartpury after completing his A-Levels with excellent

grades.  Whilst playing for the Under 19s at Hartpury, Nick captained

the side that won the English Colleges’ FA National Championship

Play-Off Final against Filton College at Ashton Gate, the home of Bristol

City FC.  He was also captain of the Hartpury College Under 18s team

that won the English Schools’ FA National Championship two years in

succession, 2009 and 2010. In 2011, Nick was a member of the Senior

squad that won the British Universities and Colleges’ Sport National

Championship title beating Edinburgh University 4-2 at Bramall Lane,

the home of Sheffield United FC.

On an individual note, Nick represented his country after he was

selected for the England Schools U18 National team, where he went on

to make a string of appearances and as a result was named captain of

the England side the following year.

Following completion of his A-Levels, a number of options were

presented to Nick in terms of university scholarships and interest

from professional clubs.  Nick decided that staying at Hartpury and

progressing onto a degree programme was the most beneficial option

for him. This allowed Nick to continue taking his football career

seriously whilst developing his qualifications and long term aspirations

at the same time.

JAKE GOSLING SIGNS

PROFESSIONAL CONTRACT

Former Hartpury College student Jake Gosling

signed a professional contract at Exeter City

and joined up with the first team squad in

July 2011 to prepare for the 2011/12 league

campaign.  Paul Tisdale (Exeter City Manager)

acknowledged Hartpury College when discussing

Jake’s development as a player and talked about

his versatility and creativity. Tisdale said, “he is a

player that is capable of scoring goals and, if he

progresses well, he has a fantastic opportunity to

be successful in his football career.”

Jake studied at Hartpury College for one year

after being released from Plymouth Argyle. He

represented both the Under 18s and 19s teams

and made a tremendous impact during his time

at Hartpury.  Forest Green Rovers were quick to

involve Jake in their Reserve Team fixtures and his

performances led to the offer of a two-year YTS

contract from Exeter City.

One of the highlights of Jake’s career to date

was scoring the winning goal against Cambridge

United to book Exeter City an FA Youth Cup tie

against former Premier League side Blackpool.

Jake has continued to progress and his hard work

and dedication has been rewarded with a full-time

contract and a taste of professional football.

LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL FOR EX PRO

LEE MOLYNEAUX

Professional football is a hard game both on and off the field, something

defender Lee Molyneaux is only too aware of.  Lee began his professional

career at Portsmouth, but spent most of his two-year contract sat on

the bench.  Lee then had two fantastic years at Oxford United under the

management of Graham Rix.  However, the dream was ended abruptly for

Lee when a new manager came in and Lee was released from the club.

Lee felt his professional career was over and found work as a personal trainer

whilst playing part-time for Cirencester Town FC.  One of Lee’s team mates

at Cirencester Town was a lecturer at Hartpury, and it was his suggestion

that Lee should return to education and play in the Hartpury Academy.

Commenting on how Hartpury changed his life, Lee said:

“The college gave me the opportunity to play the game I love and work

towards an academic qualification.  Hartpury made me realise that there is

light at the end of the tunnel when your professional playing career seems to

be at an end.  I’m more confident and happier than I’ve been in a long time

and I am really grateful to Hartpury for giving me the opportunity.”

Lee is now employed by global sports brand Nike and works as the UK’s

Football Development Manager.  Lee’s job involves visiting professional

football clubs in the Premier League and the Football League to deal with the

kit demands of the players and staff.

The Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) have assisted with the funding

of Lee’s programme and will do so for any registered and ex-registered players

and members of the PFA.

MATT SMITH

Former Hartpury College student Matt Smith now

plays for Brisbane Roar in the Australian A-League.

Matt studied a Masters Degree in Sports Business

Management and was at Hartpury for one year in

2006/07.  During his time, he captained the Senior

team to both the BUSA National Southern Premier

League and the BUSA National Championship

titles.  Matt was named man of the match in the

National Final against Team Bath that was played

at Loftus Road, QPR FC.

Following Matt’s performances throughout

the season, he was then selected for England

Universities and also Great Britain Universities,

where he competed in the World University Games

in Bangkok in the summer of 2007.

Matt was then signed for North Queensland Fury

in Australia and played alongside the former

Liverpool star Robbie Fowler.  He then signed for

Brisbane Roar at the start of the 2010/11 season.

Matt was ever present in the side and the team

romped to the league title and also secured the

A-League Playoff crown in the Grand Final in front

of more than 50,000 fans.  Matt was picked in

the A-League team of the season at the Australian

Player of the Year Awards.

Matt was named Brisbane Roar captain for the

2011/12 season and was chosen for a two-day

Australian Socceroos National training camp in

October 2011.
