V. UNDERSTANDING GRAMMAR
A.
Read about until
‘Til is short for until and has the same meaning. It can be followed by a noun.
They waited until [’tildark.
It can also be followed by a clause.
They all jump in the sea and swim ’til [until] they have righted it again.
Note: Until is only used to refer to time. Don’t use it for distance or quantity. For
example, They sailed until the Caribbean and I counted until 30 are not correct.
These sentences require up to.
Until means up to a certain point in time—and not beyond. The sentence
I’m home until 6:00 means that I will not be home after 6:00.
B.
Use the grammar
Write a sentence about each situation, using until.
Example:
They stayed on the island. They left when they ran out of food.
They stayed on the island until they ran out of food.
1. They traded with the visitors. The visitors left.
2. He explored the Caribbean. He left when it was time to go home.
