Small Group Collaborative Activity
To coincide with the scenario presented in the introductory instructional video, the teacher will provide each small group with several pictures of animals as well as a map/layout of a zoo. Students will work collaboratively to discuss possible groupings for the animals and then paste them accordingly on their zoo map. Finally, students will present their map to the class and provide a rationale for their groupings that includes appropriate references to the observable features of the animals. The teacher and student groups will utilize a rubric to evaluate these products. The students will receive a self-evaluation rubric with student-friendly words and picture clues. Scaffolding: Feedback/Questioning from More Knowledgeable Others (MKO) The interactive game provides immediate feedback based on student responses by explaining incorrect selections and expanding on correct ones. The teacher will evaluate and approve student entries for the collaborative journal experience before uploading for peer review and commenting. If a misconception is discovered, the teacher will provide immediate intervention and support through questioning to clarify understanding so that students may revise their work. During the collaborative journal experience, students will interact with peers to gain a variety of perspectives about grouping animals based on features. Students will be exposed to connections made by classmates that they did not think of themselves which will extend understanding of the topic. The teacher will comment and pose questions regarding student entries as well as groupings/comparisons made during the collaborative journal experience to extend understanding. During the small group collaborative activity, the teacher will question and facilitate discussion among students about their choices for grouping animals in order to clarify any misconceptions before sharing with the class. Rubrics During the small group collaborative activity, student groups will utilize a self-evaluation rubric to ensure that all requirements have been met before presenting their final product to the class.
