8. HOW TO TEACH PRIMARY SCHOOL CHILDREN

Color Scheme:
After an assessment of lighting, you’ll want to figure out your color scheme. Color scheme comes prior to classroom layout for obvious reasons. You wouldn’t want to layout your classroom perfectly just to move everything if you have to paint right? When choosing a color scheme for your classroom, the first thing you need to do is pick a color that best fits the needs of your students as the primary color for your classroom. It is important to recognize what colors elicit emotional responses. For example, a bright red might not be the best idea for a primary color in a classroom because it can elicit anger, anxiety, and feelings of danger in your students (Chapman). Instead, focus on colors that lead to emotional responses of creativity and calmness.
To pick the best primary color for your classroom, you must again assess the features of your classroom. If your classroom does not have many windows to let in natural light, choose a warm primary color to try and mimic the moods that come from access to natural light. Choosing a shade of red or yellow as the primary color of your classroom can give your students access to the moods of energy, positivity, and passion (Chapman). Using red or yellow will allow you to provide some of the emotions that are an effect of natural light to your classroom without actually having an abundance of natural light.

If you are fortunate enough to have adequate natural lighting in your classroom, consider using a cooler primary color for your classroom. Cool primary colors such as blue are a great option to implement in your classroom. Shades of blue can give your students feelings of calmness and strength. In fact, many consider blue to be the best color for classrooms because of how. Mrs. Congrove, a third-grade teacher in the South-Western city school district, uses tones of blue in her classroom because of how she believes it makes her students feel. Mrs. Congrove said, “I try to use blues wherever I can to create a space for my students to feel calm and safe”
After choosing the right primary color for your classroom, the next thing you need to do is choose a neutral color to compliment your primary color. Neutral colors are mostly used to highlight/compliment primary colors. Although neutral colors often take the back seat, neutral colors also have effects on mood and emotions. Common neutral colors for classrooms are black, white, and gray. Each of the aforementioned neutral colors can complement your primary color while also providing your students with positive emotions. Black can add a sense of sophistication and elegance to your classroom (Chapman). White is often associated with cleanliness, something that is very important in classrooms. Finally, gray can be used as an alternative to the neutral colors of black and white (Chapman). Is black too edgy or brooding for your classroom? Choose a lighter shade of black with a dark gray. Is white too shiny and pure? Choose a light gray to complement your primary color.

Choosing a color scheme for your classroom can be an extremely intimidating task. Although this task can be scary, it is important to think about which colors will affect you and your students’ moods. It also must be noted that color schemes are subject to change. If you find that your warm color scheme is giving your students way too much energy, introduce some cooler colors to give your learning space a color effect. If the cool colors in your classroom are putting your students to sleep, try adding some vibrant warm colors to give the class an energy boost. Your color scheme needs to be adaptable to fit your students’ ever-changing needs.

If you follow all of the instructions from this article, you will have a classroom that serves your students. Your classroom will have a layout that puts your students in a position to succeed. You will have a classroom that will be well lit as the light bulbs in your students’ minds are lit. Finally, you will have a color scheme that is as vibrant and focused as your students are. Teaching strategies and technology are incredibly important in providing an excellent education for students. However, classroom design is just as important because it sets students in both the physical and mental positions they need to be in before learning starts.
