Example:

The usage of phraseological unit “Achilles’ heel” in text activates mythological knowledge structures. “Achilles’ heel” means a seemingly small but actually crucial weakness; a place of especial vulnerability, especially in a person’s character (from the mythological legend about Greek hero Achilles, who was killed by arrow pointed at his heel, the only vulnerable place in his body). Being used in the text, it characterizes the personage and indicates his weak sides.


I could no longer concentrate upon those brilliant lucid little civilizations, although in the strong light the coloured pebbles and the miniature seaweed trees looked like jewels by Faberge (Murdoch, The Sea, The Sea)

Here we can see the contemporary allusion. It is expressed by the expression of “like jewels by Faberge”. Faberge is currently well-known company which sells productions of jewelers. The allusion is still in force it is considered as contemporary.

Later, Dana said reluctantly, «I'm afraid it's time for Cinderella to turn into a pumpkin, darling (Sheldon, The Sky is Falling)



In the fragment, the quotation is taken from the fairy tale Cinderella. The name of Cinderella activates the allusive antroponym. This is like an imagery. The imagery of Cinderella is called in various variations like Snowwhite or Zolushka but the plot of theirs is almost the same.

Here the historical names of Samson and Solomon are mentioned. The mentioned names are considered as antroponym and they activate the religious allusion. Historically, Samson symbolizes obtaining the great power. In turn, Solomon is a symbol of wisdom and being genious.

He felt very large in the room. Gulliverian, both powerful and clumsy (Murdoch, An Unofficial Rose).



Here the antroponym of Gulliver is used. It is one of the main characters of the work Travels of Gulliver by Jonathan Swift. Gulliver is thought as the tallest human in the world in a certain place according to the work. By using this name, the character’s inner emotion is described.

The professor was a big jovial man of Falstaffian appearance (Eccles, A Species of Revenge).



Here the example of literary allusion is used. The allusion is related to a literary character’s name which is Fallstaff by Shakespeare. Fallstaff is a fatty and medium height person and is thought as an easy going.

It might not be the head of a goddess - indeed a screw of curl-paper on each side the temples quite forbade that supposition - but neither was it the head of a Gorgon; yet Malone seemed to take it in the latter light (Bronte, Shirley).

In the text, we can see the example of mythological allusion. It is expressed by the expression of the head of a Gorgon. This is believed that it means the terrible experience.

Mrs. Todd rocked gently for a time, and seemed to be lost, though not poorly, like Macbeth in her thoughts. (Jewett, A Dunnet Shepherdess)



Here the allusion is described by literary-fictional character. The character’s name is Macbeth and he never gives up and goes forward all the time. In the text, this point is mentioned.

She had the withdrawn feline look of a woman who is conscious of power and seeing herself as Cleopatra (Murdoch, Under the Net).

Here another historical name is used. The used name is related to the Princess of Egypt Cleopatra. She is a beautiful, intelligent, clever and powerful historical woman. The emotion of the character in the text is illustrated by this historical allusion.

Lloyd grinned happily. He was dazzled by his new fame. He imagined that Tom Cruise must feel something like this at a world premiere (King, The Stand).



Here also the contemporary allusion is used through mentioning the name of well-known actor Tom Cruise. The character in the text feels he has gain the achievement in the international gauge like Tom Cruise.

Membury comes too, a grinning, loping Caesar dwarfing his Antony, hauling on his ear, dreaming of fish and smiling at the wrong people (Le Carre, A Perfect Spy).



Here historical allusion is used by activating the historical names. The names of Caesar and Antony are related to the Ancient Roman. We know that Caesar is a great emperor of the Roman Empire. In turn, Antony was Caesar’s helper in ruling the country. Their relationship illustrates the relationship of the characters in the text.
