24- Television is now widespread in all communities. Almost everyone has
access to this medium on a daily basis. However, the effects of television
are not always positive.
What are some of the negative effects of television?
What can be done to minimize these bad effects? Give reasons for your
answer.
One can say that television is one of the most important technological
developments and nowadays almost everyone in the world has access to TV.
Television has caused significant changes in family life and education some of
which have been negative.
Certainly TV can be a powerful educational tool which can benefit the people
however, the effect that TV has had on our lives have not all been positive.
Before television was widely available, families spent more time together talking
and playing games. They seemed much closer to each other than modern
families. Now many children even have their own TV in the bedroom so they
spend very little time with their parents or brothers and sisters. Some people
might argue that this helps young people to be independent, but I think this is a
negative effect because they will be unable to communicate effectively or relate
to others emotionally. Also the fact is that many people waste a lot of time
watching poor quality programs which do not have a positive influence.
Advertising, too, can have very negative effects. Furthermore TV is sometimes
used to deliberately misinform people, for example when it is used as a
propaganda tool by governments.
I am sure there are some very practical ways in order to reduce the negative
effects of TV in society. First off, I think the government must legislate rules
according to the religious beliefs of the nation preventing the people in charge
from broadcasting poor quality programs. Another thing the government can do
is to provide education programs for parents and children instructing them about
the negative effects of TV. And finally I think every single individual must
understand that it is time to kick the habit of watching TV and take up a more
beneficial and active hobby.
In conclusion even though it can benefit the members of the society, I believe
the one-eyed monster is doing a great harm which we must not ignore.

In the future, students may have the choice of studying at home by using technology
such as computers or television or of studying at traditional schools. Which would you
prefer? Use reasons and specific details to explain your choice.
