24. Some parents believe spanking children is cruel while others believe 
at times it can be a good form of punishment. 
What’s your opinion? Use specific reasons to support your opinion. 
The term corporal punishment means the intentional infliction of pain on the 
body for purposes of punishment. Spanking can be defined as the use of 
physical force aimed at causing children to experience pain but not injury, for 
the purposes of correction and control of youthful behavior. Spanking is a 
controversial topic and should not be taken lightly. 
As a child I was spanked when I did something wrong. My parents never left a 
mark on me whatsoever. Being spanked taught me respect and kept me in 
line. The way my parents disciplined me, I think is an accepted method of 
punishment. I believe what parents do to their kids at home is their business 
as long as it is not a cruel or an unusual form of punishment. I find that 
younger kids these days are not disciplined enough by their parents; these 
kids do not respect their parents or other adults. 
Spanking can be a practical form of punishment if first you tell the child that he 
or she is going to be spanked. Spanking should never be spontaneous. 
Parents must also tell the child the reason for the spanking, he or she may 
already know why, but it's best that you verbally tell the child. Parents must 
also let the child know that even though they are giving their children a 
spanking they still love their children. And finally parents must take the child 
into a private room such as a bathroom or bedroom, and close the door. A 
spanking should never be administered in front of other siblings or onlookers. 
However the child's personality directly influences the form of the punishment 
that works best for him or her. Some children will only respond to physical 
punishment and others will respond to verbal punishment. So before deciding 
on the form of punishment, you must know your child well. 
In conclusion, I believe spanking can be regarded as an acceptable form of 
punishment as long as you do not hurt your child and follow the rules stated 
above.
