IELTS Listening Exam

The listening section of the exam involves listening to the audio, reading the

question  sheet,  and  answering  gap-fill,  matching  or  multiple  choice

answers.  Candidates  often  have  difficulty  with  listening  because  the

information  required  to  answer  the  questions  is  often  spoken  quickly.

Therefore, the key to success is relating the information that is heard on the

audio to the information on the question sheet. To do this, candidates need to

understand  the  context  of  the  situation.  In  other  words,  they  need  to

understand what the talk is about, who is talking and why.

The listening test is in four parts, with the first part being the easiest and the

fourth  part  being  the  most  difficult.  Each  part  lasts  for  about  eight  minutes

and  includes  ten  questions.  In  total  the  test  lasts  for  about  thirty  minutes.

After this, candidates have ten minutes transfer time, when all forty answers

must be written onto the final answer sheet.

The  first  part  involves  a  conversation  between  two  or  three  people,  often

about  buying  or  selling.  The  second  part  is  a  talk  by  one  person  about  a

general topic, such as a radio programme or a tour guide giving information.

Part  three  is  usually  a  conversation  between  students  or  university

professors,  in  which  they  discuss  an  academic  situation.  Part  four  is  an

academic lecture given by one speaker. The listening section is the same for

both General IELTS and Academic IELTS.

Before the exam

a. Practice your listening skills

- Listen to news radio, podcasts and academic lectures from websites.

- Try to take as many practice tests as possible so you are familiar with the

timing of the test.

- Try to listen for specific information such as names, places and dates.

- Practice speaking English as much as you can before the exam and listen

very carefully for details when someone speaks to you in English.

- Watching television or movies will not give you the best practice, as you

are listening and viewing at the same time. This is different to the listening

skills you will need during your IELTS listening exam.

b. Spelling

- Try to improve your spelling by studying lists of words that are commonly

misspelled.

- Study the rules of capital letters and abbreviations.

- Remember that spelling mistakes are marked incorrect on the test paper.

c. Grammar

- Review grammar for singular and plural nouns, countable and uncountable

nouns and parts of speech.
