Intelligence is the most important factor in leadership.
To what extent do you agree?
A leader needs a host of skill sets to be good at what they do. Although the leader's other abilities are undoubtedly important, in my view, the IQ of a leader plays the most significant role in the success of their team or organisation.
The importance of the leaders' other skills should not be underestimated.
Firstly, communication skills are really helpful when managing a team. That is to say, the leader should be able to communicate the goals clearly to their followers/subordinates if they want to achieve them. Research shows employees who understand the vision of their company tend to work harder and smarter. Furthermore, experience, which the manager has gained through years of hard work, clearly brings many benefits. Experienced leaders usually know how to handle conflicts and train others to work-related tasks.
Therefore, other competencies of a leader are significant.
However, no other ability can be compared with the intelligence of a leader in terms of significance. The number-one reason for this is that leaders should be quick-learners. In other words, they should be able to acquire new skills and adjust their teams and plans to the changing world quickly. Otherwise, their company can lose to competitors or even go bankrupt. Even more importantly, a leader must be a great problem solver. This is because everyone in the team expects them to come up with solutions to pressing problems. Intelligence is extremely crucial here as problem solving skills and fast learning are linked with their IQ.
In conclusion, despite the important role which interpersonal skills and experience of a leader plays in an organisation, personally, I believe that their IQ is even more essential. Therefore, companies and people should choose leaders based on their intelligence.
