Development of e- commerce
The development of e-commerce in Portugal has been significant over the past few years. The country has seen an increase in online shopping as more consumers have access to the internet and as businesses have recognized the potential of e-commerce. Here are some of the key factors that have contributed to the development of e-commerce in Portugal:
1.Increase in internet penetration: The number of internet users in Portugal has been steadily increasing over the years, with over 70% of the population now having access to the internet. This has led to an increase in online shopping, as consumers can easily access e-commerce platforms and make purchases from the comfort of their homes.
2.Growth of mobile internet: With the widespread adoption of smartphones and tablets, more consumers are using mobile devices to access e-commerce platforms. This has led to an increase in mobile commerce (m-commerce), where consumers make purchases using their mobile devices.
3.Government support: The Portuguese government has recognized the importance of e-commerce and has implemented initiatives to promote its growth. The "Comércio Digital" program, for example, provides support and funding to SMEs looking to sell online.
4. Increasing consumer confidence: As more consumers shop online, they become more comfortable with the idea of making purchases over the internet. This has led to an increase in consumer confidence in e-commerce platforms.
5.Availability of payment methods: E-commerce platforms in Portugal offer a range of payment methods, including credit cards, debit cards, PayPal, and bank transfers. This has made it easier for consumers to make purchases online.
6.Improved logistics and delivery: E-commerce platforms in Portugal have improved their logistics and delivery services, making it easier and faster for consumers to receive their purchases.
7.Rise of online marketplaces: Online marketplaces have played an important role in the development of e-commerce in Portugal. Platforms like OLX, CustoJusto, and KuantoKusta have made it easier for individuals and small businesses to sell products online, without the need for a dedicated e-commerce website.
8.Cross-border e-commerce: Cross-border e-commerce has also contributed to the growth of e-commerce in Portugal. Many Portuguese consumers are now buying products from foreign e-commerce platforms, particularly from Spain, France, and the UK. Similarly, Portuguese businesses are now selling their products to customers in other countries, particularly in Europe.
9.Emergence of new e-commerce business models: The development of e-commerce in Portugal has also seen the emergence of new business models, such as subscription-based e-commerce and flash sales websites. These models have attracted a new generation of consumers who are looking for unique and personalized shopping experiences.
10.Impact of COVID-19: The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the development of e-commerce in Portugal. The closure of physical stores and the need for social distancing measures has led to a surge in online shopping. According to a study by EY, e-commerce sales in Portugal grew by 70% in the first quarter of 2021 compared to the same period in 2020.
11.Increasing investment in e-commerce: As e-commerce continues to grow in Portugal, there has been an increase in investment in the sector. This includes investments in e-commerce platforms, logistics and delivery services, and digital marketing.

Overall, the development of e-commerce in Portugal has been driven by a combination of factors, including increased internet penetration, government support, and improved consumer confidence. As the e-commerce industry continues to grow, it is likely that Portugal will continue to be an important player in the global e-commerce landscape.
