history of Europe, and not only. English speakers call it Germany, Germans themselves call it Deutschland. Germany is known as the country of poets and thinkers.
Today, the average German dress is typically western. Both men and women wear dark simple suits and shirts in business context. However, each region of the country have their own traditional costumes, which differ a bit from one another. For example, in the state of Bavaria, the traditional costume for men is leather trousers that end just above the knee, while for women it is a dress that incorporates a bodice, blouse, full skirt and an apron. You can see people wearing these costumes, especially during carnivals or festivals. Their weddings are also very special. It is a tradition for the bride to carry bread and salt with her as an omen for food harvest. On the other hand, the groom is supposed to carry grain for good luck and wealth. In Germany a percentage of 70% of people recognize themselves as Christians. There is also a Muslim minority of 4%. A number as high as 36% do not identify themselves as having any religion or belong to another than Christianity or Muslim. The world’s most renowned classical composers, as Bach and Beethoven, who have marked the transition of music between the classical and romantic to western classical music, are Germans, who were born and died in Germany. Other famous composers from Germany are Brahms, Schubert, Handel, Telemann, Orff etc. Nowadays, Germany is home to many music festivals, starting from electronic music to hip-hop and rock & roll. The largest music festival in Germany, which is also one of the largest in the world, is the Rock am Ring festival which gathers artists and performers, as well as music fans from all over the world. Germany also has many opera houses, which also serve as a tourist attraction for foreign visitors. Sport Sport is a popular pastime in Germany, both in terms of watching it live and on TV and actual playing and participation. It is estimated that around 27,000,000 Germans are members of a sports club, whereas an additional 12,000,000 pursue such an activity individually, which shows how keen Germans are in sports. The Bundesliga, which is a German football championship, attracts the second-highest average attendance of any professional sports league in the world. The German National Football Team remains one of the strongest football teams in the world, having won a total of four World Cups (1954, 1974, 1990, 2014) so far.Football, known in Germany as Fußball, is hugely popular in all parts of the country and can be considered a national sport. With so many popular sports in the country, it’s hard to pin down a ‘national sport’. However, by far the most popular sport in Germany in terms of both participation and spectatorship is football. German football is governed by the German Football Association. The German national side is also one of the best in the world, having won the World Cup in 2014 and boasting players such as Thomas Müller, Manuel Neuer, Mesut Özil and Philip Lahm. Other top players include Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski and Arjen Robben. The most popular German sports teams are indeed the professional football teams that include Bayern München and Borussia Dortmund. Motor sports, notably Formula 1, is another hugely popular spectator sport in Germany. This isn’t surprising given that many of the top Formula 1 car manufacturing teams are comprised of the producers of the best German sports cars including BMW, Porsche and Mercedes. This is in addition to some of the world’s most celebrated drivers such as Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel. Cousin The average annual meat consumption is 59.7 kg (132 lb) per person. The most common varieties are pork, poultry and beef. Other varieties of meat are widely available, but are considered to be insignificant. Meat is usually braised; fried dishes also exist, but these recipes usually originate from France and Austria. Several cooking methods used to soften tough cuts have evolved into national specialties, including Sauerbraten (sour roast), involving marinating beef, horse meat or venison in a vinegar or wine vinegar mixture over several days. A long tradition of sausage-making exists in Germany; more than 1,500 different types of sausage (German: Wurst) are made. Breakfast (Frühstück) commonly consists of bread, toast, or bread rolls with butter or margarine, cold cuts, cheeses, jam (Konfitüre or more commonly called Marmelade), honey and eggs (typically boiled).[30][31][32] Common drinks at breakfast are coffee, tea, milk, cocoa (hot or cold) or fruit juices.[30] It is very common to eat hearty toppings at breakfast, including deli meats like ham, salted meats, salami and meat-based spreads Download 19.75 Kb.
