Areas of interest and specializations represent a focused skillset or expertise in an area within your field. You can list areas of interest or specializations on your resume to show employers that you have a unique set of abilities that can add value to the company. Updating your industry knowledge and refining your scope of work can help you advance in your career. In this article, we discuss what an area of interest is, how to determine yours, what a specialization is and how to develop one.

What is an area of interest?
An area of interest is a focus or curiosity in a particular subject area, such as a hobby, skill, or craft. Areas of interest in a career development context can involve a focus on things that can apply to your work. These things can include interest in specific languages, cultures, travel, methods or skillsets that don't necessarily fall into a category of work experience, educational background or certified qualifications. You can list areas of interest in your resume if they apply to a job description that you're applying.
For example, if a position involves researching different cultures, you can include cultures you're interested in and have studied independently from your formal education. Or if a role requires frequent travel, you can list travel, modes of transportation or places that you like to travel to as an interest.
You can create a separate section for your interests on your resume after your education or next to your skills sections. Examples of areas of interest also include:
  • Art
  • Blogging
  • Community service
  • Cooking
  • Graphic design
  • History
  • Nutrition
  • Tennis
  • Violin

How to determine your area of interest
To determine your area of interest, you can follow these steps:
1. Consider your hobbies
Think about the hobbies and activities that you enjoy doing. Those hobbies can be areas of interest that relate to your work. Consider what your current work processes or future job descriptions involve to make connections to your interests.
2. Take interest tests
Interest tests assess your innate abilities and career aptitude by asking you questions about your goals, values, education, skills and experience. An interest test measures what you like and don't like to do in a career setting to match your interests to careers based on the traits determined through the test. By answering the multiple-choice questions, an interest test calculates how artistic, investigative, conventional, enterprising, realistic or social you are.
What are the advantages of job specialization?
There are many advantages to job specialization, including:
  • Risk reduction
  • Improved morale
  • Task proficiency
  • Equipment specialization
  • Increased speed between tasks

  • Risk reduction
A benefit of job specialization is that it reduces your risk of making mistakes. When you are highly specialized in a certain job function, you have mastery of tasks within that function. With the decreased likelihood of making mistakes, you will provide value to the company you work for in both time and dollars. Job specialization makes you a more competitive employee because it’s better for a company to have highly specialized workers in a given area than those who have a base-level understanding of required job duties.
