Adam Smith
Adam Smith was a great scientist who made economics a science.
He was born in 1723 in a small fishing town near Edinburgh, Scotland. At the age of 28 Adam Smith became a Professor of Logic at the University of Glasgow. It was his first academic appointment. Sometime later he became a tutor to a rich Scottish duke. Then he received a grant of three hundred pounds a year. It was a very big sum, ten times the average income at that time.
With the financial security of his grant, Smith devoted ten years to writing his work which founded economic science. Its title was «An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations». His work had a great success.

The British Museum
For a long time the British Museum was a great library, one of the largest in the world. By law a copy of every book, pamphlet, periodical including maps and music published in Britain had to be kept at the British Museum.
Lastly the British Museum has a wonderful art gallery. It has unique collection of sculpture, ceramics, drawings and paintings of the Egyptians, Greeks, Chinese, Japanese, Indians and other peoples. It has outstanding collections of Italian drawings, English and French prints.
The British museum is the most important place of archaeological study in the world, with unique prehistoric collection.
