DESCRIPTION

T

he trail begins from the port of Marsala, a city that

Phoenicians used to call Lylibeum and that Arabs wanted

to rename as Marsa Ali. Around a small urban center, full of

art and history, there is a vast territory that concerns countless

scattered hamlets, the so-called “contrade” (districts). In the

surroundings there is a production of a wine, which has an

ancient and glorious history, with an unmistakable taste and

fragrance: the Marsala.

You can proceed to the sea-front rich in palm trees that follow

one another in both sides of the road, that lead you directly

towards the bathing area with free beaches and bathing

establishments.

At Km 10 you’ll see the Torre Sibiliana, a majestic tower whose

function was to spot pirates coming from the sea; going

beyond you’ll reach a small bay that needs to be traversed

using a walking pace. It is the territory of Petrosino, where

you’ll find many “Bagli” (Baglio: ancient Sicilian rural farm),

typical rural architectural buildings, which are easy to be found

especially in the area between Marsala and Mazara del Vallo;

they are real fortified farms with courtyards that overlooks the

old manor house. At Km 14 you’ll cross the sea-front of Biscione

which is named after the district. Leaving the coast from km

18, you’ll get into the “Strada del Vino”. This one, in conjunction

with “Sapori Val di Mazara” (meaning Val di Mazara flavor),

constitute an area where vineyards and wineries alternate

with natural beauties, cultural and historical attractions. It

is a land, with an ancient history, which has always been

dedicated to wine production.

From this point, you enter the town of Mazara, cycling along

the sea-front “Fata Morgana” and passing through the port.

After the small bridge over the canal you’ll arrive on the Hopps

waterfront where the tour ends.

Mazara has been inhabited by many populations: Phoenicians,

Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, Byzantines, Vandals, Goths,

Arabs, Normans, Swabians, Angevins, Aragonese and

Bourbons; but the most important historical period of Mazara

del Vallo, starts with Phoenicians. In fact, they were the ones

who turned the city into the major trading port, calling it

Mazar “stronghold”, thought as a boundary between the

Greeks of Selinunte and the Phoenicians of Mozia.

Nowadays, Mazara del Vallo is the most important fishing port

of Italy and the second of Europe. In 1998 the discovery of the

Dancing Satyr caused a sensation; it is a magnificent statue

dating back to the Hellenistic period.

This piece of art, whose eyes made of alabaster and colored

vitreous paste have been remarkably preserved, is slightly

taller than 2 meters and weighing about 96 kilograms.

ITINERARY FAVIGNANA

Name: Egadi: butterfly-shaped islands by bike

Kilometers: 30,33Km

Difficulty: Easy 1/5

Location and/or tourist spots: Florio establishment -

sports ground - Castle of Santa Caterina - Punta Faraglioni

- Calazza - Lighthouse of Punta Sottile - Lido Burrone -

Grotta Perciata - Cala Azzurra - Cala Rossa - Scalo Cavallo

- Cave di Tufo (tuff querry) - Bue Marino

Information and advice: The bike path runs all along

the coast, indented like the wings of a butterfly; it is a mix

of asphalt and dirt road, near some beautiful bays. If you

decide to go with a city bike suited to the asphalt, you

will not be able to cross part of the route except by using

a walking pace, so we suggest the use of mountain bikes.

Road surface: 80% asphalt 20% dirt

DESCRIPTION

T

he starting point is at the port. Proceed towards the Florio

establishment which can be reached just after 500 meters

turning right along the path. This building along with

the “Tonnara” *(old tunny-fishing factory), housed the Florio

family during the summer. Whoever has the right skill and a

mountain bike, could choose to cycle on the road which leads

from the Florio establishment to the Castle of St. Catherine;

this uphill road, paved in the first section, and bumpy and very

technical in the second one, leads directly to Punta Faraglioni

with a steep off-road descent. Crossing a paved road, you’ll

reach the sports ground at km 2.6 and then continue through

a tunnel, which can be easily circumvented, only in outward,

taking a road on the left closed to traffic; continue towards

Punta Faraglioni (at km 6,48). Following the road you reach

the beach of Calazza at Km 7.11 and the area of “Lighthouse

of Punta Sottile” at Km 11.88, on which stands the eponymous

lighthouse.

Coming back to the gallery you have to proceed to the beaches

of Marasole at Km 17.17, and at Km 19.61 you’ll get Lido

Burrone, which is the first choice of those who prefer a fully

equipped beach. Arriving at km 20.53, there is the suggestive

Grotta Perciata (in Sicilian dialect “Perciata” means punctured).

Arriving at km 22.92 you get Cala Azzurra, a small beach with

cliffs, where you can leave your bike in front of a small bar

and going down for 50 meters until a small cove with a very

crystal clear water. Once arrived at “Faro Punta Marsala” at Km

23.85, it begins a stretch off the road that is recommended to

be cycle with a mountain bike or using a walking pace. Proceed

towards the spectacular sites of Bue Marino and Cala Rossa

(respectively Km 24.22 and Km 25.51). From Cala Rossa to

Scalo Cavallo at Km 27.77, you have to overtake a particularly

challenging stretch of about 300 meters. Cala Rossa is a very

beautiful cliffs pounded by the wind, so it is advisable to visit

it in the morning; you can explore the surroundings of the cliff,

leaving the bike and walking on foot to visit “Cave di Tufo”.

Scalo Cavallo and Bue Marino are both spectacular cliffs, from

which you cannot dive. Along the way back to the village of

Favignana, once reached Punta San Nicola at Km 28.52, come

back again on the northern coast road and you’ll finally arrive

at the starting point.

ITINERARY TRAPANI/ERICE - SCOPELLO

Name: From Medieval Hamlet of Erice to the “Tonnara”

(old tunny-fishing factory)  of Scopello

Kilometers: KM 41,85

Difficulty: Easy 2/5

Location and/or tourist spots: Trapani/Erice Cable-

car - Erice - Valderice - Crocevie - Uscibene - Castle of

Baida - Scopello - Tonnara of Scopello - Guidaloca

Information and advice: Road surface 100% asphalt.

Suggested bicycles are the road bike or the trekking

bike. This trail is suitable for everyone because there is

any particular climb but only a long descent, altitude

700 meters, starting from Erice up to the sea of Scopello

cycling on a paved plain road.

DESCRIPTION

T

his itinerary includes going up to Erice with bikes on

board, taking the useful cable-car. If you want it is

possible to buy only the on-way ticket for you and your

bike; during the ride you can admire a spectacular view of

the Gulf of Trapani and the Egadi islands. The town of Erice

is located in a splendid panoramic position on the summit of

an isolated mountain at 750 m above sea level; on clear days

you can spot the Etna on the horizon. Erice houses the Centre

for Scientific Culture “Ettore Majorana”, an important cultural

catalyst for the city. The urban plan is perfectly triangular-

shaped and is bordered on the west side by huge walls, with

old keeps and three Norman gates: “Porta Spada”, “Porta del

Carmine” and “Porta Trapani”. To the south-east of the town

there is the beautiful Balio’s garden in which stands the

Pepoli castle, built by the Normans and largely changed to be

converted into villa in the nineteenth century.

Instead, the castle of Venus dates back to the twelfth century: a

typical medieval fortress built in an area where once stood the

ancient sanctuary of Venus Ericina.

Erice hosts more than sixty churches, some of which constitute

a great architectural heritage of value and precious historical

testimony.

After having visited the beautiful medieval village, ride your

bike through a beautiful panoramic descent, for about 7

kilometers. At Km 7.21 you get the village of Valderice and

then, proceed through country roads towards the villages of

Crocevie and Uscibene. At Km 25.58 begins an ascent to the

the eighteenth century, and a small square with the church

of “Santa Maria delle Grazie” 1961 and few houses. The route

the thirteenth century; the real one was built in the fifteenth

century by Giovanni Sanclemente, then it became property of

the Society of Jesus and finally of the Florio family. This itinerary

ends in Guidaloca: a bay delimited by “Pizzo of Gnacara” and

“Puntazza”. Inside there, there is a large arc-shaped beach

which extends for about 400 meters. On the west side of the

bay, there is a cylindrical tower, dated back to the sixteenth

century, used as watchtower of this stretch of coast.
