DESCRIPTION

I

t is a very suggestive trail that runs along the Sicilian coast,

going from the village of San Vito Lo Capo to the city of

Marsala, crossing all the attractions of the area of Trapani.

The route starts in front of the beach of San Vito lo Capo, a very

charming and picturesque seaside village: it seems to have

been born around a “little chapel”, later become a sanctuary,

consecrated to San Vito who worked there making many

miracles, and today it is still revered and celebrated. In the

old village center you can admire the sanctuary of San Vito

Martyr and the small temple of Saint Crescenza. Moreover

in the main street there is the Maritime Museum which

houses wreckages recovered from the seabed of San Vito.

The evocative Nature Reserve of Zingaro, with its beautiful

inlets and hiking trails surrounded by the nature, is located

just 1 km away from San Vito. From the beach you proceed

towards “Monte Cofano” taking the major road SP16. From

km16.6, cycling along the road SP18, you will pass through

the areas of “Purgatorio” and “Sperone” and then, through “Via

dei Marmi”; proceeding straight you will arrive in “Custonaci”.

From the village of Custonaci, always proceeding on the road

SP18 for 8 kilometers, you will arrive at Km28.10 entering

the village of Bonagia, where you can deviate to visit the

eponymous *Tonnara. It opens onto a tiny harbor that once

was a shelter for fishing boats, but nowadays is entirely for

tourist use. Despite significant transformations, the *Tonnara,

which already existed in the Norman period, kept its original

appearance of Baglio (ancient rural Sicilian farm) with a large

central courtyard, in which there were various buildings like

a little church currently existing (where the Rais with the

fishermen gathered in prayer before facing the burdens of the

tuna fishing), warehouses, stables, a kitchen, an ancient oven

and a mill. In the outside of the *Tonnara you can admire the

many anchors and boats used for tuna fishing, the “mattanza”, a

proof of a tradition now lost in this place. Leaving the *Tonnara

and continuing along the waterside on the road SP20, you will

pass at km 31.88 through the village of Pizzolungo first, and

then you will arrive at the starting point in Trapani, into the

parking of “Piazza Vittoria”. Trapani was born in the north-west

part of Sicily, surrounded by the sea and protected by Monte

Erice. The old town center of Trapani fully reflects the essence

of Sicily: a sequence of historical eras concerning monuments,

churches, buildings, fountains and squares, that tell the past

of Trapani and that make the different corners of the city

characteristic. As a typical seaside town, the crucial center is

the port that has gone through several changes over time. The

morphology of the territory of Trapani is a small peninsula that

extends to the sea.

You can live Trapani passing through the port and moving on

The Road of Salt towards the detour to Nubia. The “Oasi Saline”

of Trapani with Paceco, constitute a Regional Nature Reserve

which covers almost a thousand hectares within a site of

Community Importance and Special Protected Area, managed

by WWF. In the oasis an old method of salt production still

persists. The Road of Salt, which extends from Trapani to

Marsala, is exciting and breathtaking in some points. Visiting

Nubia you can see the Salt Museum which looks back over

the history and facts through so many centuries. The journey

ALTIMETER PLAN

continues on the provincial road SP21 and at Km 48.95 you will

meet the sign for Marausa Lido, the largest seaside resort of

Trapani: its sandy bay is 3km long and the waters are shallow,

surrounded on three sides by a breathtaking view of the Egadi

Islands, the city of Trapani and Monte Erice. At Km 61.04 turn

right towards the island of Mozia, a small island in the middle

of a lagoon with its archaeological remains of the ancient

Phoenician civilization as a testimony. In the Nineteenth-

century house of the archaeologist Whitaker, it is possible to

visit the important archaeological museum. Proceeding on The

Road of Salt you will ride among the typical windmills of the

Saline.

The arrival in Marsala is after 79.49 km of cycling.

Marsala is the city of wine of Sicily but also a place full of history

from the Phoenician origin, to Greek influences, Roman, Arab,

Norman, Swabian, Angevin and Spanish. With the landing of

Giuseppe Garibaldi - May 11, 1860 - the City wrote one of the

most beautiful pages of the Risorgimento that, a year later,

would have led to a united and republican Italy.

Marsala is rich in art and unique contents. As a completion

of this trail, there is the visit to the famous winery “Cantine

Florio”.
