number of kilometres travelled by an adult in a European capital city in 1977 and
2007.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make

The table shows how the travel patterns in one capital city in Europe changed by comparing
seven modes of transport used by an adult between 1977 and 2007.
Overall, while cars were the most widely used means of transport in both years, the opposite
was true for bicycles and motorcycles. It is also clear that there was a significant increase in
the average distance covered by cars and taxis.
The average distance travelled by cars, trains, and taxis all increased between 1977 and
2007. Cars saw the most significant increase, rising from 3500 km in 1977 to 7100 km in
2007, an increase of over 100%. Trains were also popular, with the average distance
covered increasing from 900 km in 1977 to 1000 km in 2007. The increase in the use of taxis
was also notable, more than doubling from 400 km to 800 km during this period.
By contrast, the remaining modes of transport including buses, motorcycles, bicycles and
walking saw a decline in the average distance travelled. In 1977, the figures for these means
of transport were the following: 400 km on foot, 500 km on the bus, 100 km each for bikes
and motorcycles. By 2007, the figures had dropped marginally to 300 km, 400 km, 90 km,
and 80 km respectively.
