On Friday the 11

th

of  March 2011 at

2:46pm JST a massive 9.0-magnitude

earthquake occurred near the

Northeastern coast of  Japan, creating

extremely destructive tsunami waves

which hit Japan just minutes after the

earthquake, and triggering evacuations

and warnings across the Pacific Ocean.

This natural disaster also caused structural

damage in Northeastern Japan, including

heavy damage to roads and railways as

well as fires in many areas and a collapsed

dam..  Around 4.4 million households in

Northeastern Japan were left without

electricity and 1.5 million without water.

This earthquake and tsunami left

thousands of  people confirmed dead,

injured or missing.  In addition to loss of

life and destruction of  infrastructure, the

tsunami caused a number of  nuclear

accidents.  There were restrictions in

staying within a zone around 20

kilometers from the nuclear reactors and

also another restriction of  21 to 30

kilometers to remain indoors as well as a

civil aviation authority, restricting 30

kilometers – no fly zone around the

nuclear crisis in order to prevent planes

spreading the radiation further.

This subject affected a big part of  the

Globe.  It was the most powerful known

earthquake to have hit Japan and one of

the five most powerful earthquakes

in the world overall since modern

record-keeping began in 1900.

When the warping drum gear clutch on the windlass cracked, the crew on the

M/V ‘Rosario’ thought it would be an easy job to replace it. They needed to get the

warping drum off  the shaft to replace the clutch. But it turned out that getting the drum

off  the shaft was more difficult than they expected!

The warping drum was initially jacked but even with maximum pressure the drum was

stuck fast to the shaft (pictures 1 – 3) so they modified the jack arrangement and welded

some stronger angle bars onto the barrel for ‘extra’ pull (pictures 4-7)! Even with a

bigger puller device, this still didn’t work.  Then they applied the good old principles of

‘heat’ and ‘cold’ to expand the warping drum (using a blow torch) and contract the shaft

using CO2 (dry ice). See (pictures 8-13).

Success! The warping drum comes off  the shaft in stages (pictures 14-17) and the

broken clutch is removed (picture 18).  The happy crew pose for a photo after the

successful operation (picture 19).  They say pictures speak a thousand words and this one

tells how a ‘routine’ maintenance task sometimes needs resourcefulness, teamwork, some

different thinking and perseverance!

Well done to Chief  Engineer Pavlo Nezhelskoy and his crew.
