History of Korean Politics

(17) Exploitation of Materials and Human Labour

Japan’s war of aggression on the Asian continent transformed Korean into a logistical base for its continental offensive. Japan built factories to produce military supplies on the Korean peninsula, and called for increased production of mineral resources, such as iron and coal. In addition, it appropriated all types of Korean goods, including food. Indeed, they seized whatever could be used to produce military supplies, including brassware and spoons.

Besides materials, manpower was also exploited. Koreans underwent brutal conditions at mines and factories, and Korean youths were drafted into the Japanese army through the so-called draft system.

Korean females were forced to join labor groups called ‘Geunro Bogukdae’ and ‘Female Geunro Jeongsindae,’ suffering harsh treatment and exploitation, and a large number were forced to serve as sex slaves for the Japanese army. Even after defeat, Japan took Koreans to Ryukyu, Japan and Hainan Island, China, where they were executed in cold blood.
