Laboratory work # 13
Theme: Configuring security mechanisms for a Wi-Fi network

Many users ignore the recommendations of their network security settings, arguing that their network is not interesting to anyone and there is definitely nothing for hackers to do in it.

But all this is a false bias, because the correct security settings can protect you from both personal data theft and accidental actions of network users. Hackers out of curiosity can change something in the settings, thereby disrupting its normal operation and leaving you without the Internet. Therefore, we recommend that you still check your network security settings.
I will show you how to configure router security using the popular TP-LINK WR841N model. But almost all routers have the same functions, so this instruction is suitable for other devices. There may be differences only in the settings menu interface.
How the work is performed:

  1. Change the username and password to log into the router.

  2. Set your Wi-Fi password.

  3. Disable the WPS function.

  4. Hide the wireless network name.

  5. Filtering devices by MAC address.

  6. Updating the router's firmware.

  7. Firmware download pages for other router manufacturers.

  8. Disable remote access to the router.

  9. Selecting the router's operating time.

  10. Filtering devices based on IP addresses.

  11. Check for third-party devices in the list of clients connected to the router.

Change your router username and password
The first thing you need to do is change the standard password to access the router settings. A password will protect you from unauthorized access to the router by others. After changing the password, no third party will not be able to change the settings for your network and connect to the Internet.
To change the name and password of access to the router settings, you need to connect to this device over Wi-Fi or using a network cable, and then enter its network address in the browser window.

The router's network address is shown on the bottom of the label. This is usually: 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1, tplinkwifi.net or tplinklogin.net, and the like.

If you specified everything correctly, the router settings menu will appear on the screen.

Go to the "System tools" tab (or "System tools") and find the item "Password".

Here you will need to enter your previous username and password, then enter the new ones and click the "Save" button. That's it, the password for accessing the router has been changed. The first step on configuring security is completed. Go further.
