Lesson 1: Talking about the weather

  1. Prepare a weather forecast reporting the weather conditions (today’s/tomorrow’s) in your city.

In Nukus, for the rest of Tuesday, mostly cloudy weather is expected.
The lowest temperature will be a freezing -10°C (14°F).
Sunrise was at 08:22 and sunset at 18:04; the daylight lasted for 9h and 41min. For the rest of the night, the sky will be clouded.
The temperature will vary between a maximum of -5°C (23°F) and a minimum of -6°C (21.2°F). The feels-like temperature will vary between a maximum of -8°C (17.6°F) and a minimum of -10°C (14°F)

  1. What is the weather like in your country in summer/spring/winter/autumn?

Spring: Spring weather comes to the country in the beginning of February. Temperature increases to 41 °F. During the spring the weather is also changes sharp. Cold heavy rains and sunny warm days during one week are typical for this country. In March it is already very warm Precipitations’ level is high at spring. During this month temperature is about 64 °F at daytime and 46 °F at nights. April is even warmer: in the plains of Tashkent it is about 72 °F at daytime and 52 °F at nights. At other areas it is from 60 °F to 89 °F.
Summer: Hot summer comes to Uzbekistan in the beginning of May and it lasts until the end of September. The hottest days are from 25 June to August 5. The middle level of temperature during this period is about 90 °F and sometimes it increases to 122 °F. Summer is the driest period of the year with one rainy day per month. Stormy winds are also non-typical for the country.
Autumn: Fall comes to the plains of Uzbekistan in October. Temperature decreases from these days but it is still warm enough. In plains of Tashkent it is about 67 °F at daytime and 41 °F at nights. Level of Precipitations increases and season of rains is about to begin. Fall lasts until the beginning of December.
Winter: Winter in Uzbekistan unlike other countries of this area is cold enough. Winter weather may change very sharp: sunny days can be replaced by stormy and rainy ones several times during a week. Annual amount of precipitation falls in winter – nearly 30-40%. In plains winter is short; it lasts from December to the beginning of February. The coldest days are from December 26 to February 5. Temperature may drop to 28 °F in plains. In mountainous area during this period it is nearly -18 °F. Winter is longer here and lasts 3-4 months. Really cold winter there is in dessert regions which are 2/3 parts of the whole territory of the country. At the remaining part it is warm enough and temperatures are about 48 °F at daytime and -24 at nights.

  1. How the weather can affect on people? In what way?

Weather and climate to a large degree determine how we stay warm (or cool) enough to survive, how (and if) we stay comfortable, what modes of transportation we use, what type of clothing we wear, what foods we can grow and eat in an area, and what resources (such as water and trees) are plentiful or rare.

  1. What do you know about the extreme weather conditions?

Weather-related extreme events are often short-lived and include heat waves, freezes, heavy downpours, tornadoes, tropical cyclones and floods. Climate-related extreme events either persist longer than weather events or emerge from the accumulation of weather or climate events that persist over a longer period of time.

  1. What should people do during undesirable weather conditions (for example: when it: snows/rains heavily, blows strong winds, icy roads, temperature is above 50-60 C or below 1 C and etc.)?

In wet weather, stopping distances will be at least double those required for stopping on dry roads. This is because your tyres have less grip on the road. In wet weather: you should keep well back from the vehicle in front - this will increase your ability to see and plan ahead if the steering becomes unresponsive, it probably means that water is preventing the tyres from gripping the road - ease off the accelerator and slow down gradually the rain and spray from vehicles may make it difficult to see and be seen be aware of the dangers of spilt diesel that will make the surface very slippery (see 'Vehicle maintenance, safety and security) take extra care around pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists and horse riders.
Task 3. Prepare a list of idioms or phrasal verbs that are related to weather conditions. Try to find equivalents in Karakalpak/Uzbek/Russian language. Read the following sample:
It’s raining cats and dogs – (Jawin sheleklep quyip atir)

  1. EVERY CLOUD HAS A SILVER LINING - To be optimistic and hope that something good can come out of a bad situation. Example: "I'm not going on holiday this year, but every cloud has a silver lining, as I'm able to spend more time with my family at home."

  2. HEAD IN THE CLOUDS - Used to describe someone being overly-optimistic about a situation or to have unrealistic ideas about something. Example: “Mike thinks he is going to pass his exams without studying. He has his head in the clouds!”.

  3. SNOWED UNDER - When you have too much work to do or to have a lot of things to deal with at once. Example: “Mike is snowed under with work. He cannot come and watch the game with us tonight.”
