We normally use “the” for names of canals, rivers, seas and oceans:
Canals: the Suez Canal,
Rivers: the River Nile, the Nile
Seas: the Mediterranean Sea, the Mediterranean
We normlly use “the” for plural names of people and places:
People (families, for example): the Clintons
Countries: the Philippines, the United States
Island groups: the Virgin Islands, the British Isles
Mountain ranges: the Himalayas, the Alps
Look at these sentences:
I saw the Clintons today. It was Bill’s birthday.
Trinidad is the largest island in the West Indies.
Mount Everest is in the Himalayas.
We normally use “the” with the following sorts of names:
Hotels, restaurants: the Ritz Hotel, the Peking Restaurant
Banks: the National Westminister Bank
Cinemas, theatres: the Royal Theatre, the ABC Cinema
Museums: the British Museums, the Ntional Gallery.
Buildings: the White House, the Crystal Palace.
Newspapers: the Daily Telegraph, the Sunday Post
Organisations: the United Nations, the BBC, the European Union
We normally use “the” for names made with “of”:
The Tower of London, the Gulf of Siam, the Tropic of Cancer, the London School of Economics, the Bank of France, the Statue of Liberty.


LESSON 2.
FERGHANA STATE UNIVERSITY.
Ferghana State university was founded in 1930. It is situated in Murabbiylar Street,19. Every year a lot of applicants are going to enter the university. Taking entrance tests are rather difficult, that’s why they must prepare hard. There are many faculties at our university. They train teachers for many subjects. For example, foreign languages, mathematics, physics, geography, chemistry, biology, history and others. Many well-known professors, candidates of sciences, many experienced teachers work at our university.
The building of our university is very old, but it is beautiful. You may see the Assembly Hall in interior of the building of the university. It is very beautiful, large, light and decorated with a national ornament and columns.
Our university is one of the largest and the most important higher educational universities in Uzbekistan. Many students study at the university who come to different regions of Uzbekistan. They study at well-equipped auditoriums. There are many lecture halls, good libraries and a beautiful reading hall at our university. There are many necessary books for our studies at the library. There is a «recourse centre» on the third floor of the main building. There are many hostels at the university. They are not far from the university. When students graduate the university they sent to different cities, towns or villages of our republic.
