GREAT SILK ROAD.
The Silk Road was the overland trade that linked Asia to Europe. The Silk Road got it’s name because Chinese silk is the most valuable product. There were also other goods were traded there like pottery, tea, spice, wine and gold.
Han Wudi discovered that people who trade with foreigners were becoming rich from trade in Chinese silk. They had obtain silk as gifts from earlier rulers of the Han dynasty, in return they for not attacking China.
Chinese traders were banned from leaving China and so they had to rely on traders from Central Asia to enter China and trade with them. Exchange of gifts between the Chinese and Central Asian took place at markets in the border of China and it was closely monitor by Chinese government.
Central Asians exchanged animal fur and quality horses for Chinese silk and tea, but later they sold the silk and tea to Europeans traders. Trade along the Silk Road benefited ancient China to get foreign goods. Second, China grew rich from the trade conducted along the Silk Road.
The Silk Road allowed for more than just trading activities. It became an important route for the exchange of inventions and ideas like paper, gunpowder and printing were taken to Europe along the Silk Road. India traders were also brought religions to China like Buddhism. The Silk Road also brought new forms of sports and culture that became popular with the Chinese.
By the 7th century CE, the Silk Road had become less popular as traders found it both faster and safer to travel to Europe by the sea. Today part if the 2000 year old Silk Road are still in use, especially in Central Asia.
