To continue this celebration, another free breakfast day will be offered on October 20 to all students at Lake Minatare. She prepares both breakfast and lunch in addition to keeping the unlimited fresh fruits and vegetable bar stocked! Mrs. Baszler knows each student by name and greets each one with a smile. Please join us in recognizing the work of our food service program in the month of October!

***PARENTS/GUARDIANS - PLEASE NOTE - If family members DO NOT want to purchase anything but still want to help out our school and give credit to your student, please direct them to the classroom gift cards mentioned in the packets.
At SchoolMall.com, these merchants have agreed to give a percentage of sales to schools who are registered. Most merchant contributions to your school will average 5%-10% but some merchants go as high as 50% of sales! It really is a great program because you earn money from things people are already buying. Thank you for your support of our school!!! Thursday, October 5 th , 2017
FROM THE NURSE’S OFFICE It’s already the beginning of cold and flu season! If your child has a fever, please keep them home until fever free for 24 hours without fever reducing medication. This helps ensure that the student is no longer contagious.
From healthychildren.org: “U nfortunately, there is no cure for the common cold. Antibiotics may be used to combat bacterial infections, but they have no effect on viruses. The best you can do is to make your child comfortable. Make sure your child gets extra rest and drinks lots of fluids. Your pediatrician may want to see your child or ask you to watch him or her closely and report back if there is not daily improvement or a full recovery after one week.”
Health offices do not stock over the counter medication such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen, TUMS in the office. If your student needs these at school, please consult with your school’s policy or call the health office staff.

KINDERGARTEN
Kindergarten is working soooo hard! Our goal this week is to learn not to interrupt. Interrupting at home is probably not a horrible problem but in a family with 12 kids, it can be a real time stopper. If you noticed your child losing points on Class Dojo, it is probably for interrupting or blurting out during a lesson. If you reinforce this rule of respect at home it will help tremendously here at school. Thanks!
In math we just started Unit two. If you didn’t get the letter about what we will learn in the unit please let me know and I can send another one. We made number racks and are practicing all the combinations for ten.
In Reading we are reading What Comes First. It is a book that includes a lot of science. The kids are doing a great job with Choral reading. Many kids are reading to you at night with the leveled black and white books. They are doing a great job! Keep it up! We have five words on the word wall. His, is, I, the, and was. Please point these words out when reading at home.
In phonics we have learned 13 of the 26 letters! Your child should be able to name these letters and tell you the key word and sound for all of them: a,I,o,u,b,d,s,m,c,t,f,n, and g. We also learn specific words to say while writing the letters.
We will be going on a field trip to the Public Library and to the Pumpkin Patch on Tuesday, the 17 th of October. All students must return a signed permission slip in order to go. Please sign and return the bottom half of the paper your child brings home. You may keep the top half as a reminder to dress for the occasion. A jacket, long pants, and sturdy shoes are recommended. No sandals please. All students will need to bring one dollar to purchase a pumpkin. A big thank you to the Engel family for allowing us to purchase such inexpensive pumpkins! It should be a lot of fun! Let’s just hope for good weather!
I am looking forward to parent/teacher conferences coming up this month! It is so much fun to share how your child is doing in Kindergarten! FIRST & SECOND GRADES Can you believe it is October already? There is a lot going on this month! Mrs. Hill and I are in the process of arranging a field trip to have a tour of the Lied Scottsbluff Public Library and then go to the Pumpkin Patch to choose a pumpkin for Science and Math observation. Pumpkins are $1.00. If this is a hardship for anyone, please let me know. We will be sending home a permission slip that must be signed and returned by Thursday, Oct. 12th. Students should wear long pants and bring jackets in case of cold weather.
You will be receiving information on how to sign up for Parent Teacher Conferences the week of the 23 rd . I
hope to be able to visit with all of you about how your child is progressing this year. Red Ribbon week is also that same week. Monday, Oct. 23 rd , students may wear P.J.’s; Tuesday the 24th, they may wear Team apparel or exercise clothing to “Team up against drugs”; and Wednesday the 25 th
support our pledge to be drug free and practice healthy lifestyles”. Thurs. and Fri. ther e is no school due to conferences and a Comp. Day.
Picture Day is Oct. 10 th !
Family Math Night is Thursday, Oct. 12 th . Come and experience how your students do Math in the classroom. There is no school the following day as teachers will be working on report cards.
Finally, Halloween Parties will be on Halloween this year. Students may bring a costume to put on for the party, if they wish. Ours will be the last hour of the day, 2:30-3:30. I already have several party sign-up sheets back. If you haven’t se en one, check take-home folders.
Thank you, Mrs. Martin THIRD GRADE Fall is here! With the weather turning colder, please remind your child to dress for the weather- we will have outside recess as much as possible.
October is a busy month. Remember we don’t have school Oct. 13 th
(professional development and report cards) and Oct. 26-27 (Parent-teacher conferences). I look forward to meeting with all you for conferences in a couple short weeks! And, see you in family math night on Oct. 12 th ! We just returned from our field trip to the Wildcat Hills Nature Center to the Bird Banding Station. I am so happy to report that the students were very well behaved, they asked great questions, and we learned a ton of good information. Our class was the first this year to actually witness a bird land in one of the nets to be carefully banded, measured, then released. It was a really special experience!
October is also the month that Pizza Hut Book It kicks off! Your child should have brought home a tracking calendar to keep track of daily reading. At the CUT OUT AND RETURN TO THE SCHOOL OFFICE Many of you know Lake Minatare Elementary has a Facebook page!!! We post pictures of the kids (along with faculty & staff) doing different activities, etc. We have decided that we will need to have parental permission each school year. Please sign and return this form as soon as possible. Student’s Name: ________________________________________________________________ Parent(s) Name: ________________________________________________________________ _______ I/We give permission for our child(ren) to have their pictures posted on the Lake Minatare Elementary Facebook page. _______ I/We DO NOT give permission for our child(ren) to have their pictures posted on the Lake Minatare Elementary Facebook page.
CUT OUT AND RETURN TO THE SCHOOL OFFICE end of the month, you and your child should both sign the form, then return for your pizza coupon. Happy Reading!
It’s also nearly time to kick off Mrs. Wright’s “famous” 40 Book Challenge! The guidelines of the challenge are to read 40 different books over the course of the year in a variety of genres. The books must be chapter books (or a minimum of 100 pages.) Reading at home counts, as well as the students’ read -to-self work here at school. When the kick-off is official, I will send some more information home.
In a week or two, look for a note about our Halloween party. It will be similar to previous years, in that students will need to bring (not wear) their costumes and will change here at school towards the end of the day. If you are interested in providing treats for the party, just let me know. Thank you!
Our writing celebration will be next Wednesday, Oct. 11 th . We have chosen a Western theme and will sit around the campfire (paper ) and share our Personal Narrative stories and sing songs. Jee-Haw! Reading book summaries are also due Oct. 11 th . Thanks, kids, for all of your hard work! In Math class, the 5 th grade is learning how to add and subtract fractions, use ratio tables and double number lines. They are learning the traditional way, but also how to use money and the clock to find common denominators. Have your child show you how!
Looking forward to seeing you all on Family Math Night, Oct. 12 th ! LIBRARY - Get The “Just Right” Book This is just a reminder; please return your books on time! If you need the book for more than a week, you can renew it.
I meant to say in the last article that we have over 90 new books most of them fiction. Remember to check if the book is right for your reading level by using the FIVE FINGER RULE. How? Read one page, and hold up a finger for each word you cannot figure out. Five or more words you still need to find the “Just Right” book. Four or less means you have the “Just Right” book.
