IELTS Listening Paraphrasing Advice
The most effective tool to do better for sections 3 and 4:
1. Improve your overall listening ability by listening to English short lectures (Youtube) and podcasts. You should only be listening to English every day and no other language. Notice I did not say TV and Movies. Those do not focus on listening.
2. Improve your Vocabulary: We have section 25 that discusses vocabulary.
3. Learn how to listen for Paraphrasing as the answers always involve synonyms and paraphrasing.
Below is all the information I have about recognizing paraphrasing on the listening exam. You have to put these strategies into practice or hire a private tutor to help you with that.
The three most effective strategies make paraphrases on the exam.
1. Using synonyms (words bearing the same meaning)
2. Changing the form of words
3. Changing the grammatical structure
You have to understand that a big part of getting better at the paraphrasing required for the exam involved the improvement in your vocabulary. In the last section of the course, you will find lists and lists of synonym vocabulary. Also, the higher your English level, the easier it is to paraphrase. This means that if you are currently an intermediate level student, you have to work on your English listening and reading processing speed. Also, you have to be able to read and listen simultaneously. This is not an easy task. Reading and listening at the same time.
You need to focus on the WHOLE meaning of what they say, not the individual words. What is the meaning of the language that they used in connection with the keywords in the question?
If you do the scanning exercises we have in the reading section, you can better understand paraphrasing. The skill applies to reading and listening.

On the IELTS Listening, you have to able to hear paraphrasing like this:

1. (grow) in and out of the water = on the banks and throughout the water

The Best Advice:
The best advice is to work at creating paraphrase boxes. You need to create a table with two sides. One side has the keywords from the question, and the other side is where you write the language that they used to paraphrase this language in the recording.
For example, you would look at multiple-choice questions 21-25 Section 3 of a Listening Practice. You would pull out the keywords and put them on the left side of the table. Then play the audio, and when you hear the paraphrase of this language, you write is down next to its match.
The table would look like this:
