Genre:
This book is about the difficult path of one writer and in many ways this novel is autobiographical from the first pages you can see the similarity between the writer and the main character

Theme:
The author wants to show us about the high endless desire of the protagonist to achieve the location of the desired girl. About the power of love, about the strength of the spirit, about faith in one's own strength

Atmosphere:
A wonderful novel that shows us the history of the formation of the human personality , we may plunge into the atmosphere of that century , we can feel like a person of that time and we can realize the difference between the strata of society.

Major character:
Martin Eden is a very handsome and strong guy. No girl can resist charm and power. He was respected among his friends. He always come to the rescue at the right time. He knows how to have a good time and stand up for himself. He is a very generous person. He never afraid of hard work and always did it well. Martin is confident and he has a very tender heart.

Ruth Morse is an educated girl from a wealthy family. For Martin Eden she becomes the embodiment of everything refined, unearthly and romantic . She has blue eyes and golden hair.

Minor characters:
Ress Brissenden is a close friend of Martin who understood and supported him his desire to devote himself to literature.

Lizzy Conolly is a simple girl who truly loved Martin and could make him happy.

Gertrude is Martin’s sister , a kind and helpful woman.

Bernard Higgenbotham is Gertrude’s husband , a shopkeeper a greedy and hypocritical person.

Summary:
Martin Eden an illiterate 21 year old guy met a girl , Ruth , from a wealthy family, who changed his whole life . He was a simple sailor . His goal was to get a good education in order to be worthy of Ruth. He begins to write to woo Ruth’s family and high society. But along the way, he encounters a lot of hypocrisy and lies . The structure of the society also disappointed Martin; behind the masks of educated intellectuals, whom he once admired, turned out to be the most ordinary, without an opinion-hypocrites. He suffered a lot of pain and struggled with his fate and society. And because of that, he committed suicide.
Setting:
The action of the novel “Martin Eden” takes place at the beginning of the 20th century in Oakland (California, USA).

My opinion:
In my humble opinion this book is very interesting. I enjoyed reading it in 3 days without taking my eyes off it. There were even moments when I cried and rejoiced. It was as if I lived with them and felt every little things there. This is a wonderful novel where it is shown how a young sailor becomes a member of high society for the sake of his sincere love for Ruth, but alas because of love for her and her indifference to him, disappointment settles in his heart , he is no longer interested in a word or money. It killed him.

In my opinion the title fits the book . Because all events of the novel are connected with main character Martin Eden.

‘’Under the muscled body of his he was a mass of quivering sensibilities . At the slightest impact of the outside world upon his consciousness, his thoughts , sympathies and emotions leapt and played like lambent flame’’

This episode for me was very interesting because in this scene the author describes every detail of his first impression about Ruth when he saw her .

This novel for me was very interesting. While reading this book I felt all emotions in the world; I was happy , mad , sad , disappointed. I really recommend to read this book.

Why not? Of course I agree with author’s point of view concerning to the theme . But it would be better if main character Martin Eden would be alive and be happy with Lizzy who loves him truly.

The ideas in the book are clear and understandable.

My mark for this novel from my point of view is 17 out of 20

Because in the ending of the story the main character died . It touches my feelings and make me cry.
