Match background

Having survived two penalty shootouts in the Play-offs to qualify for the Group Stage of the

AFC Champions League, Al Sadd of Qatar are in a strong position to reach the Knockout Stage

after a strong start that has put them three points clear of their rivals at the top of Group C.

The 2011 AFC Champions League winners began the Group Stage with a 0-0 draw at Iranian

champions Foolad Khouzestan and edged Al Hilal of Saudi Arabia 1-0 before turning on the

style to hammer Uzbek Cup holders Lokomotiv on Matchday Three.

A pair of goals by Khalfan Ibrahim and one each by Hasan Al Haydos, Nadir Belhadj,

Abdelkarim Hassan and Grafite guided the Qatari side to an emphatic 6-2 victory over their

Uzbek visitors, who got consolation goals from Damir Kojasevic and Jasur Khasanov as they

moved up to seven points after three games.

They have a healthy lead over second-placed Al Hilal, who began the Group Stage with a 3-1

home win over Lokomotiv but have failed to find the net in their last two games as they lost

to Al Sadd and were held to a 0-0 draw at Foolad.

Those results mean that Al Sadd can seal their place in the last 16 with two games to spare if

they beat Lokomotiv in Tashkent and Al Hilal beat Foolad in Riyadh on Matchday Four.

However, they are likely to face a much sterner test in the return game against the Uzbek

club, who have just one point from their three games but will be determined to give a better

account of themselves in front of their home fans after their dismal performance in Doha.

There is also plenty of intrigue for the return match between Al Hilal and Foolad in Riyadh.

With striker Nassir Al Shamrani returning for the Saudi club after his eight-game suspension

was provisionally lifted by the Court of Arbitration for Sport, the 2014 runners-up will be

determined to return to winning ways on their home ground.

However, Foolad have proven tough to break down in the competition and they are unbeaten

in their last 11 games although their last five matches have all ended in draws.

Al Sadd’s 6-2 victory over Lokomotiv in Doha on Matchday Three was the first-ever AFC

Champions League meeting between the teams. Lokomotiv are making their debut in the

Group Stage while Al Sadd are making their tenth appearance in the competition.

Lokomotiv are still seeking their first-ever win in the AFC Champions League. Their 1-1

home draw with Tractorsazi Tabriz on Matchday Two is the only match which they

have not lost so far in the competition.



Their 6-2 loss to Al Sadd on Matchday Three is their heaviest ever defeat in the

competition. They currently have the second-worst defensive record in the Group

Stage with 10 goals conceded, one less than Vietnamese side Binh Duong.



Defender Salim Mustafaev will miss the match through suspension after he received

his second yellow card of the Group Stage during the heavy defeat at Al Sadd.



However, midfielder Lutfulla Turaev is available again after being banned for the visit

to Qatar after receiving two bookings.

Domestic form

After drawing their first two games, Lokomotiv picked up their first win of the Uzbek

league season with a 3-1 win at Sogdiana last Friday.



Al Sadd’s 6-2 win over Lokomotiv on Matchday was their biggest-ever win in the AFC

Champions League. It was only their second victory by a four-goal margin in the

competition after a 5-1 win over Al Ittihad of Syria in the 2011 Play-offs.



They are winless in three previous visits to Uzbekistan in the competition, losing twice

to Neftchi – 2-0 in 2005 and 2-1 in 2007 – and drawing 1-1 with Pakhtakor in 2011.



Since beating Jeonbuk Motors on penalties in the 2011 final in Jeonju, Al Sadd have

gone winless in their last six away games, losing three and drawing three including a

0-0 stalemate at Foolad Khouzestan on Matchday One.



Forward Khalfan Ibrahim continued his good form in the competition with a brace in

the 6-2 win over Lokomotiv. He has three goals in this season’s Group Stage and a

total of 14 since his debut in the AFC Champions League in 2006.



The goal by Grafite in the win over Lokomotiv was the Brazilian’s first in the

competition for Al Sadd. He scored three for UAE side Al Ahli in the 2014 tournament.

Domestic form

Al Sadd have recorded back-to-back 5-1 wins in the Qatar Stars League against Al

Khor and Gharafa but they remain in second place, five points behind leaders

Lekhwiya with two games left in the season.

Al Hilal vs Foolad Khouzestan

The 0-0 draw between Foolad Khouzestan and Al Hilal on Matchday Three was the first AFC

Champions League match between the clubs. Al Hilal are taking part in the competition for

time while Foolad are making their third appearance.

Al Hilal have suffered only five defeats in 38 home games in the AFC Champions

League but three have them have been against Iranian clubs. They lost 1-0 to

Zobahan in the 2010 semi-finals, 2-1 to Sepahan in 2011 and 2-1 to Esteghlal in 2013.



Their 1-0 win over Sepahan last year was only their second win in seven home games

against Iranian clubs in the competition.



Forward Nassir Al Shamrani is available to play in this game after his eight-game

suspension for spitting at an opponent in last year’s final was provisionally lifted by

the Court of Arbitration for Sport before an appeal hearing later this month.



However, midfielders Salman Al Faraj and Saud Kariri will both miss the match

through suspension after receiving two yellow cards during the Group Stage.



Goalkeeper Khalid Sharahili marked his first appearance in the AFC Champions League

for Al Hilal since May 2012 by keeping a clean sheet in the 0-0 draw at Foolad

Khouzestan on Matchday Three.

Domestic form

Al Hilal moved up to third the Saudi league, seven points behind leaders Al Nassr,

after a 1-0 win at Al Taawon last Saturday.

Foolad Khouzestan are unbeaten in their last 11 games in the AFC Champions League,

dating back to a 2-1 home defeat by Syria’s Al Ittihad in 2006. However, they are

winless in this year’s tournament after drawing their first three games in Group C.



They have drawn their last five matches in the competition with their last win coming

on their only previous visit to Saudi Arabia last April when they trounced Al Fateh 5-1.



With just one goal in three games, they are tied with Bunyodkor of Uzbekistan,

Korean side FC Seoul and Japan’s Gamba Osaka and Urawa Red Diamonds for the

lowest goal output in the Group Stage.



However, with only one goal conceded, they have the joint-second best defence in

the competition, behind China’s Beijing Guoan, who have kept three consecutive

clean sheets.



Midfielder Mohsen Mosalman will miss the match through suspension after receiving

his second yellow card of the Group Stage in the 0-0 stalemate against Al Hilal.

Domestic form

Foolad Khouzestan ended a run of four matches without a win after they came from

behind to beat Estehglal 2-1 last Friday to remain in fifth place in the Iranian league,

seven points behind leaders Naft Tehran.
