3.1.2 Washes
The charges are washed after heat treatment to remove the cooling oil. When thermo-
chemical processes are performed, the charges need to be washed before heat treatment as
well. Since chemical reactions are a part of the treatment, the surface of the steel objects need
to be clean. All washes in the plant use alkaline detergents, except one wash which uses
degreasing solvents as detergent.
A wash consists of a washing chamber with a number of tanks underneath. The charge is
loaded into the washing chamber and the loading door is closed. The chamber is filled with
wash solution which is pumped from the tanks below. The liquid passes a filter when it leaves
the washing chamber. The tanks are insulated and are heated by an electric heater with a
thermostat. The washing is performed at 60-80°C. [15]
