Introduction 
Children’s literature is a genre that developed from “a largely overlooked area of the 
publishing industry to a lucrative and financially important sector” (Pearson 2013).
Pearson states that this is evident in the pay and visibility of writers and illustrators, and 
in the position children’s literature occupies in the publishing industry (2013). It is with 
this that the genre is popular worldwide, and has a great influence in the way in which 
it entertains and educates for parents and children alike.
According to Grenby, “children’s literature, as we recognise it today, began in 
the mid eighteenth century and took hold first in Britain” (4). Before this, there was no 
specific genre for children as “childhood and adolescence were conceived not as 
independent living sections,” (trans. Ewers) Jean Jaques Rousseau’s manifesto, Emilie 
ou sur l’education 
helped change this as he recognised childhood as “a highly 
independent form of human existence, separate from adulthood (trans. Ewers). 
Rousseau’s work supported the “starting point of a radical reform of children’s 
literature,” (trans. Ewers). This type of literature has been used to educate and entertain 
children, nurturing their ideals and supporting their construction of identity.
