13 2. Gender Roles and the Masculine Hero: 1950’s British Children’s Literature The first text to be analysed is LWW, a book that has been heralded as a children’s classic since its release in 1950. The novel has received much criticism for Lewis’ portrayals of gender. Scholars have argued that Lewis sustained a “gender hierarchy and bifurcated gender roles of a traditional patriarchal society” rather than seize the opportunity to create a world opposed to unequal power relations in gender (Vermeji 5). Scholars’ critiques relate directly to Lewis’ own publications, where he defends gender hierarchy – God’s plan to have women subordinate to men (Van Leuuwen 9). Alongside this, Lewis supported “patriarchal monarchy”, the idea in which would be the “sole lawful form of government” had Eve not bitten the forbidden fruit (9). Lewis has been noted to have disliked educated women, and women who left the domestic sphere, however, Lewis lacked female influence throughout his life (36). When he was young, his mother passed away, and he received his education at an all-boys school, leading to the possibility that as a youth, he was under-socialised with women. Alongside the arguments of Lewis as a misogynist, there are debates defending him, such as Monika Hilder’s debate on the feminine ethos. Hilder believes that Lewis celebrates characteristics typical of the “Christian heroic ethos” that “challenges much of what we tend to privilege in Western thinking” (Hilder 6 in Markkanen 3). Hilder argues that Lewis does not condemn women, and that he redeems them through his use of Christian ‘feminine’ attributes for his male and female characters.
