Primary Sources 
In this dissertation, I analyse six primary texts.
The texts I have chosen are: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe (1950) by 
C.S Lewis, and Northern Lights by Philip Pullman (1995) on the British side, and Jim 
Knopf und Lukas der Lokomotivführer 
(1960) by Michael Ende, Die Kleine Hexe 
(1957) and Der Räuber Hotzenplotz (1962) by Otfried Preußler, and Tintenherz (2003) 
by Cornelia Funke on the German. These texts have been read extensively worldwide, 
and can be deemed as classics, as will be discussed in Chapter 1.
The criteria for a book to be deemed a classic as told by Kümmerling-Meibauer 
is that they should be “supreme achievements that have introduced new themes, 
materials, forms and genres into children’s literature”, books which “have played an

outstanding part in the children’s literature of a country or language area, and are 
notable for particular innovations or for being representative of their epochs” (5-6). 
Based upon this criteria, the six primary texts of this dissertation can be categorised as 
classics.
What added to my choice of primary texts is the fact that the authors are 
connected in some way. Funke uses quotes from Ende and Preußler’s texts in her own 
novel, and Pullman wrote NL in response to Lewis. Throughout the dissertation, I have 
connected these texts in their issues and ideas regarding gender. It must be noted that 
the primary texts I have chosen are part of a series and yet, I have primarily chosen the 
first novel of each series. The rationale behind this choice is that the first novel 
introduces the reader to the characters. Often, the first impression and portrayal of these 
characters remains with the reader throughout the series, despite any changes to the 
character’s personality or appearance. I also argue that the chosen primary novels that 
belong to a series deal more with character representation and development in the first 
novel, as later novels are more involved in the plot and the protagonist’s quest.
