used only when the colour of something is not pure or is difficult to describe exactly: ‘It’s an
unusual bluish-grey colour’. See Note at COLOURED 1 .
Note however that the name of a colour can be used with in colour: ‘It’s brown in colour with
white buttons down the front.’
