INTRODUCTION
Varieties of English
English is a worldwide language. Between 1 billion and 1,5billion people across the world speak English. Between 375,000,000 and 400,000,000 people are native English speakers. Considering these statistics, many appraise the English language to be a world language. Since the English language has become so whoesale, it is no surprise that different varieties of English have appeared.
There are many diversities of English spoken in the world. The oldest variety of English is British English, spoken in the United Kingdom. About 60 million people are native British English speakers. The variety of English with the largest number of native speakers is American English, with 225 million native speakers.
The other major varieties of English are Canadian English, Australian English, New Zealand English, South African English and Indian English. Some linguists also recognize another classify of a variety of English known as World English.
All varieties of English split the same basic theory of the language, but unquestionable words, phrases or linguistic constructs may be different. For example, in British English, one says I’m going to hospital. In American English one says I’m going to the hospital. In British English one may say he is going to the cinema, in American English one says he is going to the movies, and in South African English, the phrase is going to the bioscope.
Varieties of English may be further divided into dialects such as Anglo-Cornish or Welsh English in Great Britain, Gallah or Gulf Southern in the United States and Bengali English and Southern Indian English in India. Whatever the variety or dialect, English speakers the world over may liaise with each other, with only occasional space in comprehension.
English often has a range of grammatical constructions for expressing the same linguistic concept. Most speakers, for instance, likely use more than one way of forming a negative statement with the verb have. I haven’t any money, I haven’t got any money , I don’t have any money, I have no money, I’ve not got any money and I’ve no money are all comparatively mainstream forms, but a propensity to use one more consistently may in fact give subtle clues about a speaker’s identity.
Forms such as I’ve nae money, I’ve no got any money, I havenae any money, I ain’t got any money, I don’t got any money, I ay got any money, I han’t got any and I hanna got any money are all clearly regionally or socially marked and thus much more revealing. Most varieties of English also allow multiple negation ngiving us even more choice - I don’t have no money and I ain’t got no money neither and so on.
Most native speakers have a range of words for expressing the same concept and we vary our lexical choices according to context and audience. We tend, for instance, to avoid words like knackered (meaning ‘tired’) when speaking to young children or foreigners, but most of use it without hesitation among friends. Individuals vary as to whether they use knackered in the presence of older family members or in front of strangers or to superiors at work.
In such cases we might subconsciously favour one of several more mainstream colloquial terms like shattered, done in or whacked. And then there are other variants like jiggered, wabbit and cream-crackered that tend to occur among speakers from the same or similar geographic background. The tasks here are designed to encourage students to explore lexical variation captured in sound recordings on this site and to investigate lexical variation in their own community.
