Perceptual modality

Perceptual modality is defined as the means through which information is obtained from the environment or the learning setting. This information is the data that an individual's brain must process for learning to occur.

When a modal verb is used to express the speaker's opinion about a statement, then this is epistemic modality

the conditioning factors are internal – the subject’s own ability or willingness to act

When a modal verb is used to affect a situation, by giving permission, etc, this is deontic modality
