MODALS 
Can 
The modal ‘can’ is a commonly used modal verb in English. It is used to 
express: ability, opportunity, request, grant permission, to show 
possibility. It is this large amount of functions and the fact that ‘can’ is 
replaced by other modals when it is used to express future or past time 
that often lead to certain errors. 
e.g. I can drive very fast. 
He can’t climb the tree. 
Can you help me? 
Could 
The modal ‘could’ is the past equivalent of the can. We use could to 
show that something is possible, but not certain. 
e.g. They could come by by car. 
They couldn’t dance very well. 
Could we go home now? 
Should 
We use should most commonly to talk about what is the ideal or best 
thing to do in a situation. So it can be used to give suggestions and 
advice. 
e.g. We should leave it until tomorrow, it’s late now. 
He shouldn’t speak to his parents in that way. 
Should we keep a seat for Margaret?
Must 
When we think carefully about facts, we often use must to express 
deduction sand conclsuions. We use must to talk about the future in the 
past when we report speech or people’s thoughts in formal contexts. 
e.g. The pain was back in full force, but she knew she must not give in 
to it. She must go on day by day. 
There mustn’t be any rubbish left.

 The subject and must change position to form questions. We don’t use 
do/does/did

Have to 
The modal have to is used to show that you must do something and to 
give advice or recommend something. 
e.g. First, you have to think logically about your fears. 
You don’t have to knock – just walk in. 
Do we have to take our shoes off?
