- Are particularly suited to kiosks applications for multimedia. They are simple to use, by touching the part of screen, and are suited for use by members of the general public.
- They also offer physical security as the other contents of the system can be hidden behind the locked doors of a cabinet.
INPUT DEVICES - Touch Screens
- There are two main touch screen technologies:
- The screen is covered with a textured coating that is sensitive to pressure and registers the location of the user’s finger when it touches the screen
- A framework of invisible beams of infra-red criss-cross in front of the screen and calculate where the finger has pressed.
INPUT DEVICES - Graphics Tablets
- Provide a more precise input device than mice and trackballs.
- They provide considerable control and are often used be graphic artists to edit finely detailed graphics.
- A special pen is used against the pressure sensitive surface of the tablet and this in turn causes the cursor to move on the screen.
INPUT DEVICES - Scanners
- Scanners are particularly useful in the development o multimedia as they convert existing artwork such as cartoons and photographs into electronic images and avoid the need to create original images.
- There are 2 types of scanners:
- Flat-bed scanners - which provide images of up to 300 or 600 dot per inch (dpi) in color gray-scale
- Hand-held scanners – which are more limited and are typically only used for small images and columns of text.
