Mumbai fighters draft World Champions & Olympians to Fight for India Baku, Azerbaijan, 7 October 2011: Mumbai Fighters delivered their first punch in some style at the World Series of Boxing (WSB) Draft held at Baku on October 6, 2011. The India Boxing Team picked up an exciting & formidable line-up which includes a World No. 1, Youth Olympics champion and 2010 Commonwealth Games gold medalist to name a few.
Current World No. 1 middleweight boxer Abbos Atoev of Uzbekistan, 2010 Youth Olympics gold medalist Damian Hooper and Commonwealth Games welterweight gold medalist Patrick Gallagher of Ireland were picked in the first three rounds of WSB draft held on Thursday.
Irish man Gallagher, 22, was a welterweight gold-medalist at the Delhi CWG last year. Atoev, Hooper and Callagher would fill up the middleweight category for Mumbai Fighters in the 2011- 12 season of WSB.
For the light heavyweight category, Fighters didn’t settle for anything less. Uzbek Sardor Begaliyev, 19, was picked in the fourth round of the Draft. Begaliyev won the silver at the 2010 World Youth Championships in 81kg category.
Mumbai Fighters continued their quest to form a world-beating side by picking current light welterweight European champion Raymond Moylette, 21, from Ireland for WSB lightweight category.
Team Principal and owner Udit Sheth expressed his satisfaction with the line-up and thanked Indian Amateur Boxing Federation (IABF) for their timely inputs. “We are very happy with our selection from the draft. We got the 1st pick, and with the expertise of our Technical Director and IABF team we selected the best. Atoev, Callagher, Hooper, Begaliyev and Moylette are all excellent fighters with strong records to their name. Now the boys will assemble at camp shortly and will come together to Fight for India. The India Boxing Team looks strong and its performance will speak for itself starting 11.11.11.”
Apart from the above the team has also taken Trent Rawlins and Paul Koon into the draft for the heavy weight category. Both boxers have a formidable record in WSB and will bring their experience to guide the new stars.
The Fighters will have a total squad of 20 boxers out of which the seven foreign champions have been selected. The final 13 Indian boxers will be closed by team Head Coach and Technical Director in the next fortnight. These will mainly comprise of boxers in the lightweight and bantam weight category.
The boxers drafted by Mumbai Fighters: Abbos Atoyev (UZB - Middleweight 73kg), Damian Hooper (AUS - Middleweight 73kg), - Patrick Gallagher (IRL - Middleweight 73kg), Sardor Begaliyev (UZB - Light Heavyweight 85kg), Raymond Moylette (IRL - Lightweight 61kg)
