At its bifurcation (division), the trachea divides into the right and left main bronchi, which pass into the lung. The right main bronchusis wider and directed more steeply downward than the left, and for this reason aspirated foreign bodies most often find their way into the right main bronchus. Above the left main bronchus runs the aortic arch and belowit, in front of the left main bronchus, the pulmonary trunk divides into the left and right pulmonary arteries. After a short course, each main bronchus divides into lobar bronchi, three on the right, two on the left. From the lobar bronchi on each side proceed 10 segmental bronchi although the 7th and 8th segmental bronchi on the left are usually combined.

The lungs are a pair of organs lying in the thorax on each side of the mediastinum, each in a pleural cavity. The mediastinum is the middle portion of the thoracic space lying between the two thoracic cavities. It contains the heart, the great vessels, the trachea, and the esophagus. It is bounded below by the diaphragm and above by the chest cage. The apices of the lungs reach above the first rib through the thoracic inlet.
