The Lexical and Grammar Competence test consists of THREE parts:
Each question carries ONE mark. Total time allowed: 45 minutes. Part 1 A law of 1834 in Britain said that people __Q1__ give money to the poor, unless they were very old or ill. Living __Q4__ in the workhouse were very hard and you were not allowed to leave the house __Q5__ special permission. Part 2 Questions 11-20 In the following text, each line (11-20) has three underlined words or phrases marked A, B, or C. Find the word or the phrase which has a mistake and must be changed in order for the sentence to be correct. If there is no mistake in the line, choose D (no mistake).

Write your letter in about 130-150 words on your answer sheet. You can use this page for any rough work. Part 1 You and your family are on holiday abroad. You are staying in a hotel, but your are not satisfied with some aspects of the accommodation. Write a letter to the hotel manager. In your letter, you should introduce yourself explain what is wrong with the hotel room, and say what action you would like the hotel manager to take Don’t include any address. Begin your letter as follows: Dear Sir or Madam, Part 2 Do your agree or disagree with the following statement: Inventors are not as important to society as doctors. State: whether you agree or disagree with this statement ; bring examples to justify your opinion; include personal examples where relevant; Write your essay in appropriate style and format in 230-250 words on your answer sheet.
