Window on the world
Television gives us a window on the world. As well as providing hours of entertainment, it
brings news and history into our homes. People have watched man’s first steps on the moon, seen record-breaking sporting achievements and witnessed wars in faraway places – all thanks to television. It has brought different people, from different cultures and with different ways of life, closer together.
In 1929, when programmes were broadcast for
the first time, there was only one channel. Today there are hundreds of TV channels available via satellite, cable or digital. With so much choice, people are watching more and more TV. The
most popular channels are sports channels. Also popular are shopping channels, such as ‘TV Shopper’, where you can buy anything from wedding rings to CD players and used cars. And then there are the phone-in channels, where viewers can discuss personal problems; music channels, which broadcast non-stop music; and
ten different movie channels to choose from.
Modern TV provides entertainment and information 24 hours a day, every day of the year. But should we spend so much time watching it? We are gradually becoming a nation of
spectators, with television at the centre of our
lives. Maybe it’s time to switch off!
