OLD ENGLISH
Vocabulary: Old English has a very different vocabulary from modern English, with many words that are no longer in use. Old English vocabulary is largely derived from Germanic languages, particularly West Germanic languages such as Old High German and Old Norse. However, it also has loanwords from Latin and Celtic languages. Here are some examples of Old English vocabulary:
Nouns: "fæder" (father) "mōdor" (mother) "hūs" (house) "weorc" (work) "sēoƿ" (sea) "dæg" (day) "niht" (night) Verbs:
"dōn" (to do) "cuman" (to come) "sēon" (to see) "willan" (to will) "ġefēon" (to rejoice) "hātan" (to command) Adjectives: "eald" (old) "niwe" (new) "gōd" (good) "dēop" (deep) "heah" (high) "lēof" (beloved) "mǣre" (famous) Adverbs: "swīðe" (very) "lȳtlīce" (slightly) "nū" (now) "hēr" (here) "þǣr" (there) "þonne" (then) "sōna" (soon) Pronouns: "ic" (I) "þū" (you) "hē" (he) "sēo" (she) "hit" (it) "wē" (we) "gē" (you all) "hīe" (they) It is estimated that only about 5-10% of Old English words which is still used in English today, have their roots in old English, but many of these words have undergone significant changes in meaning or spelling over time.
