The image of the character can be decorated with the help of various artistic means existing in the language. Of all the expressive language means, lexical ones are of the greatest interest, because words are the main unit of language and text. They become the main conductor of the intention of the author of the text, the basis for an adequate understanding of the meaning of the text [1]. The choice of vocabulary plays a crucial role in creating characters' images. An important source of information about the character are the units of the secondary nomination – tropes. I.V. Arnold emphasizes that the use of vocabulary in a work of fiction that has a functional stylistic coloring introduces additional meanings. The role of even small stylistically colored inclusions can be very significant. In general, foreign inclusions are distinguished by a wide variety of materials and functions. They can originate from any functional-stylistic layers. This can be the vocabulary of scientific, official, conversational style, as well as sublime, poetic, terminological, vernacular, dialect, slang vocabulary, etc. [2] Metaphor is one of the most striking means of expressiveness of speech. In addition, it is distinguished by its wide use: it is present in texts of various types, starting with poetic speech and journalism and ending with languages of different branches of scientific knowledge. Let‘s look at how a metaphor is defined by various researchers, what types of metaphors are distinguished and what features they have. Traditionally, the metaphor was associated with stylistic figures, or language tropes, that is, with some transformations of fragments of language. According to I.B. Golub‘s definition, a metaphor is ―the transfer of a name from one object to another on the basis of similarity‖ [3]. In the Stylistic Encyclopedic Dictionary edited by M.N. Kozhina, the following definition can be found: ―a metaphor is understood as a word or a turn of speech used figuratively to define an object or phenomenon based on some analogy, similarity‖ [4]. We will find a similar definition in D.E. Rosenthal‘s Dictionary of Linguistic Terms: ―metaphor is the use of a word in a figurative meaning based on similarity in some relation of two objects or phenomenon‖ [5]. In this paper, we will lean towards the definitions of domestic scientists. The most complete definitions of this linguistic means are given in the Linguistic Encyclopedic Dictionary edited by V.N. Yartsev: ―Metaphor is a trope or figure of speech, the use of a word denoting a certain class of objects, phenomena, actions or signs, to characterize or nominate another, similar to this class of objects or an individual. By extension: metaphor is any kind of use of words in an indirect meaning‖ [6]. Turning to the study of types of metaphors by L.L. Kasatkin, we can find that the researcher distinguishes between common language metaphors if one or another metaphorical meaning of the word is widely used and is known to everyone who speaks this language (hands made of gold, steel will) and individual (author's) created by a writer or poet, characterizing his own stylistic manner and not widely Download 1.65 Mb.
