individuals write, they have to think carefully about the words
they use, which helps them internalize new vocabulary
(Bolger & Zapata-Rivera, 2017). Research has shown that
writing can help individuals retain new words better than
simply reading or memorizing them (Waring & Takaki, 2003).
Writing can also help readers understand the nuances of words
and how they are used in different contexts. By using words in
writing, individuals can explore their meanings in greater
detail and develop a deeper understanding of their
connotations and usages (Zareva, 2018). Writing allows
individuals to experiment with new vocabulary and try out
different ways of using it, which can help them gain a more
nuanced understanding of the English language (Bolger &
Zapata-Rivera, 2017). Writing can also help readers develop a
deeper understanding of vocabulary by analyzing and using it
in different ways. By engaging in activities such as word
games, vocabulary quizzes, and creative writing exercises,
individuals can develop a greater familiarity with different
types of vocabulary (Waring & Takaki, 2003). Research has
shown that when individuals are actively engaged in using and
analyzing vocabulary, they are more likely to retain and
remember it (Bolger & Zapata-Rivera, 2017). Active reading
strategies, such as using context clues and annotating text,
have been found to be effective in enhancing vocabulary.
Contextual clues refer to the words and sentences surrounding
an unfamiliar word that can help readers understand its
meaning. Annotating text involves actively engaging with the
text by underlining or highlighting important vocabulary,
taking notes, and making connections between different
concepts (Hudson, 2007). These strategies help readers
develop a deeper understanding of new vocabulary and
improve their ability to use it in different contexts. Writing
strategies, such as journaling and writing in different genres
and formats, can also be effective in enhancing vocabulary.
Writing in different genres and formats, such as writing poetry
or short stories, can help individuals experiment with different
types of vocabulary and develop a more nuanced
understanding of language (Beck & McKeown, 2007).
Journaling, on the other hand, provides individuals with a
space to reflect on their experiences and thoughts, and can
help them explore and internalize new vocabulary in a
meaningful way (Graham & Hebert, 2010). Incorporating
vocabulary-building activities into daily routines and
assignments can help individuals develop a habit of actively
engaging with new vocabulary. Activities such as creating
vocabulary flashcards, participating in vocabulary games and
quizzes, and discussing new vocabulary words with peers and
teachers can help individuals retain and remember new words
(Nagy & Anderson, 2017). Research has shown that repeated
exposure to new vocabulary is critical to building a strong
vocabulary (Beck & McKeown, 2007).
