1/31/2015 Page 79 SIFF 2015 PROGRAMS - GENERAL FILM SCREENINGS A-Z To Be Takei USA | 2014 | 94 min • Documentary Feature Director: Jennifer M. Kroot Producers: Gerry Kim, Jennifer M. Kroot, Mayuran Tiruchelvam Attention Star Trek fans — secret and otherwise! This film is a look at the many roles played by eclectic 77-year- old actor/activist George Takei, whose wit, humor and grace have helped him to become an internationally beloved figure and Internet phenomenon with 7-million Facebook fans and counting. George Takei doesn’t shy away from digging into his remarkable career and personal life in Jennifer Kroot’s delightful and incisive film "To Be Takei". As a child forced into Japanese-American internment camps, the actor- turned-activist reveals the ways that racism affected him well into his early acting career, where he played stereotypical Asian stock characters in film and television shows. Even after landing the iconic role of Hikaru Sulu on Star Trek, Takei’s sharp eye, coupled with his wicked sense of humor, continued to challenge the status quo well into the twenty-first century. Now at 76, nine years after formally coming out of the closet, Takei and his husband, Brad, have become the poster couple for marriage equality, highlighting homophobia through television interviews and hilarious skits, many of which have gone viral and garnered widespread attention. Whether dishing on William Shatner or parodying the now-infamous comments made by Tim Hardaway, Takei proves time and again why his presence in popular culture remains as fresh and necessary as ever.

1/31/2015 Page 86 SIFF 2015 PROGRAMS - GENERAL FILM SCREENINGS A-Z Vessel USA | 2014 | 90 min • Documentary Feature Director: Diana Whitten Producers: Mitchell Block, Diana Whitten A fearless sea captain sails a ship through loopholes in international law, providing abortions on the high seas, and leaving in her wake a network of emboldened activists who trust women to handle abortion on their own terms. How she battles fierce opposition and regulatory obstacles makes for an eventful film. Rebecca Gomperts, horrified by the realities created by anti-abortion law around the world, felt compelled to challenge this. Her method: to provide abortions on a ship in offshore waters. Her project, Women on Waves, begins as flawed spectacle, a media frenzy, faced with governmental, religious, and military blockades. But with each setback comes a more refined mission, until Rebecca has the revelation that she can use new technologies to bypass law — and train women to give themselves safe abortions using WHO-sanctioned protocols with pills. We witness the creation of an underground network of emboldened, informed activists, working at the cutting edge of global reproductive rights, who trust women to handle abortion themselves. "Vessel" is Rebecca’s story: one of a woman who heard and answered a calling, and transformed a wildly improbable idea into a global movement. Twice decorated at SXSW.

1/31/2015 Page 88 SIFF 2015 PROGRAMS - GENERAL FILM SCREENINGS A-Z Watchers of the Sky USA | 2014 | 121 min • Documentary Feature Director: Edet Belzberg Executive Producers: Elizabeth Bohart, Stanley Buchthal, Lisa Kleiner Chanoff Producers: Edet Belzberg, Amelia Green-Dove, Kerry Propper Featuring: Samantha Power, Benjamin Ferencz, Emmanuel Uwurukundo, Luis Moreno-Ocampo With his provocative question, “why is the killing of a million a lesser crime than the killing of an individual?” Raphael Lemkin changed the course of history. An extraordinary testament to one man’s perseverance, the Sundance award-winning film "Watchers of the Sky" examines the life and legacy of the Polish-Jewish lawyer and linguist who coined the term genocide. Before Lemkin, the notion of accountability for war crimes was virtually non-existent. After experiencing the barbarity of the Holocaust firsthand, he devoted his life to convincing the international community that there must be legal retribution for mass atrocities targeted at minorities. An impassioned visionary, Lemkin confronted world apathy in a tireless battle for justice, setting the stage for the creation of the International Criminal Court. Inspired by Samantha Power’s Pulitzer Prize-winning book "A Problem From Hell", this multi-faceted documentary interweaves Raphael Lemkin’s struggle with the courageous efforts of four individuals keeping his legacy alive: Luis Moreno Ocampo, Chief Prosecutor of the ICC; Samantha Power, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations; Ben Ferencz, a former Nuremberg prosecutor still tenaciously lobbying the UN for peace, and Rwandan Emmanuel Uwurukundo, UN Refugee Agency Field Director in Chad. Alternating live interviews with rare archival footage and striking animation, "Watchers of the Sky" illuminates the compassion and bravery of these humanitarians and powerfully demonstrates the ability of global activism to give a voice to the silent victims of genocide.
