Percy Fawcett and his lost city Heading 1PERCY Fawcett AND HIS LOST CITY Ever since Europeans first arrived in the New World, there have been rumors of a city of gold in the forest, sometimes called El Dorado. The Spanish conquistador Francisco Orellana was the first to search for the legendary city along the Rio Negro. In 1925, 58-year-old explorer Percy Fawcett entered the Brazilian jungle to find a mysterious lost city, called the Z. Fawtt team, and he himself disappeared without a trace. Rescue operations failed – Fawcett was not found In 1906, the Royal Geographical Society of England sponsored scientific expeditions and invited Fawcett to study part of the Brazilian border with Bolivia. He spent 18 months in the state of Mato Grosso, and during his expeditions, Fawcett became fascinated with the region’s lost civilizations. In 1920, in the National Library of Rio de Janeiro, Fawcett came across a document called Manuscript 512. It was written by a Portuguese explorer in 1753. According to him, in the Mato Grosso region of the Amazon rainforest, he found an ancient Greek walled city. T In his last letter sent home by a member of his team, Fawcett wrote to his wife, Nina: “We shall cover this territory in a few days… Do not fear failure.” This was his last message to his wife and the world.
