The word “noun” comes from the Latin nomen meaning “name”. Word classes like nouns were first described by Sanskrit grammarian Panini and ancient Greeks like Dionysius Thorax and defined in terms of their properties. For example in Ancient Greece, nouns can be inflected for tenses ,such as past , present or future, while nouns cannot. Aristotle also had a notion of onomata (nouns) and rhemata (verbs) .

The noun grammatical categories The OE noun had two numbers : singular and plural; three genders: musculine(M), feminine (F), neuter (N); and four cases: nominative, genitive, dative and accusative.

In ancient times nouns were classified according to their meaning . Nouns denoting objects of the same kind formed a special group with their own stem-forming suffix . But later the principle of the original classification was lost.
